Question Affiliates Using Dynamic Banners - Opinions Please
I've read all over this message board how successful dynamic banners can be so we are in the process of putting together some promotional dynamic banners that go to a landing page with the special or sale that we are running.

I wanted to ask those that would know best a couple of questions regarding dynamic banners.
    1) Would running a sale every other week and updating the banner be frequently enough or does it need to be a weekly/daily special?
    2) I would really like to do 2 banner sizes if possible. What sizes would you recommend? I see mostly 120x240 & 468x60.

Any other advice or comments regarding dynamic campaigns would be appreciated. We want to get it set up right from the beginning.

    Thanks!

    Hi -
I know everyone is busy but I just wanted to make sure you had seen my previous post about dynamic banners. I hadn't seen any replies so I wasn't sure if that meant our affiliates were not interested in dynamic banners or just that they hadn't had time to reply.

Please take a moment to reply with your thoughts if it is something you feel would be beneficial. Otherwise, we'll stick with our regular banners for now.

    Thanks!

Dynamic banners in those 2 sizes get prime real estate on sites if the merchants do seasonal and hot specials landing pages. Its a one two punch for conversions.

Didn't see you post till now - been busy with Mothers day, kids, etc...

I love dynamic banners and use them all the time. The sizes you listed are good.

One size that is nice but a lot of merchants don't have is the half size banner - 234 x 60. Those are great for blogs, 3 column sites, top of page next to a logo, etc..

Change them out by season, special sales, events, whatever.

Thanks guys for the responses We are working on our specials/sales plan for the rest of the year. Once that is nailed down, we'll put together the creatives for the dynamic banners. I'll let you all know when they are ready to go.

    Thanks again!

    Janice,

Dynamic banners are great, as long as they are kept current. It doesn't matter to me how long each campaign runs, as long as the banner always shows a valid promotion.

In terms of size, I also like 125x125. Thanks!

Dynamic Banners are wonderful and I always look for them first when promoting a merchant. What Gr Sacc said is critical. I would like to share an example of what NOT to do, please:

I have a merchant who has been on my site since day 1 because I felt like I needed them. I built a page and hooked up specific links, plus a dynamic banner in a prominant spot.

A few months later I was working on a holiday and I was running late. I was only 1 month ahead of the holiday myself. I went to my page to see what I could do to spiff it up and the dynamic banner was from a promotion 6 months previous. I figured it was my fault, so I went to the merchant banner site and started looking for fresh links. Not there.

I reconfigured the page with non dynamic links and worked hard to make sure I could make minor changes to keep them fresh.

Here's the pi%^$#. One week before the holiday I get an email from the merchant telling me that it was time to start ramping up for the holiday and if I was using their wonderful dynamic banners I would already be set! They had JUST changed the promotion from dead to current. I ignored the email so I wouldn't just explode, and then the next day I get another ! "I noticed that you are not using our dynamic banners and therefore are missing an opportunity to promote one of the busiest gift giving seasons of the year. blah blah blah."

    Please don't do that.

Also, don't try it for a month or two and then give up on it. It takes time to build momentum, but in the end it's worthwhile. If you have 10 affiliates per month putting the dynamic banner up, you're only going to have 20 affiliates using it next month. That might be discouraging. But in a couple years, you'll have hundreds of affiliates using it. That's when you'll see the payoff. You'll be able to change it in one place on your end, and your new promotions will be active immediately on hundreds of sites. Stick with it.

    Hi everyone -
First off, I want to say thank you for all the great advice! We are currently running a Free Shipping promotion on select gift baskets. Therefore, we went ahead and created dynamic banners to promote the Free Shipping in 3 sizes (120x240, 125x125, 468x60). Hopefully, that will cover the needs of most affiliates. The plan is to rotate the banners as our promotions/sales change. For example, we will be running discounts on Father's Day items such as golf gifts & baskets starting about 2 or 3 weeks prior to Father's Day. After that holiday has passed, we'll do a different promotion, etc. Banners will be linked directly to the page featuring the promotion/sale.

I am open to any constructive criticism/advice you have regarding our banners. As I said, this is a new adventure for us so we can alter our path as necessary. You can access the dynamic banners either by logging into your SAS account or by pasting the following code (be sure to replace the !!USERID!! field with your SAS affiliate ID).
NOTE: I tried to paste the banner images into this message, but the IMG tags don't appear to be working or at least they weren't on the message preview so I apologize in advance if you can't see the banners here.

    Banner ID: 57091 - 120x240 Dynamic Banner

    Hi Janice,

I noticed that Banner ID: 57091 says "FREE Shipping Today Only!"

If that is a Dynamic Banner and is displayed today, then tomorrow that banner won't show up again?

I only ask because if the "Today Only!" banner show up for more than 24hrs in a row on any page, any repeat visitors we get that see that same banner today, tomorrow and the day after, may think bad about other timely offers they may see on our sites.

I like the "Today Only!" idea because it may improve click-thru by some visitors, buy I think it may also back-fire with repeat visitors if it don't change by tomorrow.

    Sal -
Based on your comments, we went ahead and made a quick change to the banner so it says Shop Now! instead of Today Only!

We will likely run a few one day specials in the future (when we have really great deals like 40 or 50% off a specific item), but this free shipping thing will be going on for a few weeks so I thought it best to make the change.

    Thanks for the feedback!
    Janice
