I was just surfing the net, ya know, like we always do. So anyhow, I am just cruisin along, looking for some new greeting pics for my celebrity section which I am thinking of reopening.

Anyhow, you can imagine my amazement when I come across a gallery of pictures which are all being HIJACKED FROM MY SITE! Now here is the really interesting part, it's being done by a HUGE COMPANY! [<EDITED FOR SAFETY OF MY EXTRA TRAFFIC I NOW HAVE!>]

I just can't believe this, not even a link back to my site or anything. (All it says is Webchasm Celebs) they linked directly to each image on my server.

BAM BOOM BOOM SMASH SLAM CRASH THUD ARGHHHHHH

I only get 30 gigs of transfer per month, and here we have a multi million dollar company stealing my bandwidth. UNREAL

I already considered a couple things but I want to hear what you all would do about this.

Thanks

Holy Cow! Personally I would be flattered at first but then again they are not really helping you because they don't provide a real link nor actual mention of url. Webchasm could be anything vs. webchasm.com even if it weren't hyperlinked would at least have been considerate.

It would be nice for you to be able to maintain the links but have mention of your site and instead of linking to webchasm.com/pic.gif to have seperate actual pages on your site with your own ads or links etc.

breeze,

You do not own the (C) on the images ... so take the images out ... and make your 404 point to your FP Free Traffic

Breeze,
I had a similar situation with About. They have/had a ton of images in there music section pulling from my server. I contacted them, they denied it...I copied the source of the few pages that I found and sent it to them...With no reply. I ended up taking each image that I was are of and putting my url on them. I could have deleted them, but why not get my url on a page that has the content people are looking for?

Take out the pics and put a link to all clicks or one of those and make 3 cents or so for each click.

On second thought...don't do that...go to an attorney and sue entertainment weekly.

don't pass go, do it.

They will settle in a heart beat but you have to sue them...it should only cost you
a couple of hundred to get the suit live.

Breeze,
Here is another one for you...There is a site at http://osama-toilet-paper.tripod.com/ that uses a background sound that I have on my site. I had put some audio files on my site and this guy heard them and he's linking to one of them. I haven't decided what I'm going to do (maybe create commercial for my website and replace the audio file). Thing is, this guy gets hardly any traffic...looking at my stats, that file played from his site only 17 times this month.

well yes good suggestion haiko
Just give an error page
just take the images out...wait a minute create new images with the same file name...and let it be typed "Screw u ecity"
That would sure make them know that u've caught them for good
Regards

Haiko, They don't have the copyright either.

Couldn't I just sue them for theft of bandwidth rather than C infringment?

breeze,

They don't have to have the (C)! They pull their results "from the web" (the infringers)!

You would never win any suit against them at all and you can't do shoot (realistically) ... do what I said or put up Pamela posters for sale or the such on your custom 404

Okay, Thanks everyone for all the ideas. It is going to be interesting to see how much money I make from the '404s'

Visions of "Mass Advertising Funds" were really starting to float in my head there for a second.

Well, I sure got that birdtrap.cgi installed with a quickness. Now to enhance it. This is gonna be fun! <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/smilies/up2something.gif>

Is there any reason why you couldn't just use them for free advertising? I would edit the images putting something like, "See the full gallery at www.webchasm.com" or some such on each one.

Man, am I sorry I read this thread. Nobody said anything about all the popups. I looked at both sites, victum and thief. That was about 10 minutes ago. Since then I lost track of the number of popups somewhere around 12 or 13. I don't know which site is responsable but I won't be returning to either.

Gary, when something like that happens hold down Alt & F4 at the same time. This will close all windows that are bothersome. (It will close all windows if you hold them long enough)

I have removed the URL, Sorry

Speaking of pop-ups, maybe you could set it up so that their site gives Infinite popups when your pictures are accessed?

Just make the pop-up code call a window which has pop-up code of its own. The pop-up code in THAT window should call the same window...Every time the window with the pop-up code is called, it'll pop again.

Popopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopopop......

I don't know if you know that one already but I figured I'd post it just in case.

As for getting the first pop to go, maybe putting it in the custom 404 would work!

PS That Alt+F4 might stop it from crashing the browser, but most of their viewers aren't going to know about that one...

Make the files small and they'll be so busy poppin' that the computer won't have time to accept any other commands anyway!

Leader, Thanks, I have it in the works BIG TIME! Oh boy are they gonna make me some money! I just got everything set up and if the traffic for the last hour is any indication I will be getting 10,000 visitors per month at least.

I changed the name of every folder so the path will go 404 no matter what celeb they try to steal.

HA HA HA HA HA HA

It will be funny to see how much I make from them now.

This is too funny. I found out they have been stealing from all 12 of my celeb galleries since as far back as last april.

Sweet sweet revenge

Erm, don't get fired from any affiliate programs... I didn't mean to suggest that a paid program would go on those popups! ("Artificially inflating traffic", you know...)

But if you know of a way to make money where you won't get canned for it, what the hey!

It should still be very sweet revenge indeed, even if you don't make money off of it

There is so much potential I wouldn't know where to begin. If they are denying all knowledge its open season too :/

My first thought would be to replace the odd picture with a naked celeb or two for a short while. Intermittent 'faults', are the worst...

For variety use it as free advertising, but I would be inclined to do that intermittently as well - so long as you restricted yourself to the times when technical support is home in bed I see no reason you couldn't while away the long winter evenings thinking up new mischief for some time to come so long as you aren't detected.

Leader, Don't worry. I have a very special incentive agreement with one coveted merchant. This will work out wonderfully

I could just see it:
"Junior is surfing the "trusted site" Mom enters theis room unexpectedly. Whap, bam Junior is whacked off of his stool when Mom catches him looking at naked pics on such a "big site" Oiyeeeeee

It would end up on Headline News.

Way too funny, I am laughing so hard I am crying. I can't stand it

Well, anyway, I guess for now the sky is the limit.
