    Altering Link Code...
    Howdy,

    I just joined up with LinkShare discovered I can't use their coding in my banner rotator on PC101. I messed with it and messed with it until I realized it was the "<IMG alt..." portion that was hosing the rotator. Once I removed it ... and put the image on my server... it worked fine!

    So, here's my problem... I sent a PM/email to LinkShare asking if it was okay that I removed that piece of coding and put the image directly on my server. That was 72 hours ago and I haven't heard from them! I don't want to add another 10 - 20 banners if I'm not going to get credit for sales. Does anyone know if this is going to be an issue... or how to to get Link Share's attention???

    I know we're not to put affiliate URLS/links here but I wanted to put up the coding so poeple know what I'm talking about. I replaced some digits with "x"s so the links don't actually work. The piece of coding I removed is in RED.

    The code that I get from Link Share is this....

    <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&offerid=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0"><IMG alt="Banner HPage_468x60" border="0" src="http://images.tigerdirect.com/affiliate/banners/Homepage21.gif"></a><IMG border="0" width="1" height="1" src="http://ad.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/show?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&bids=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0">

    This is what's running in my site in the banner rotator...

    <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&offerid=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0"><IMG border="0" width="1" height="1" src="http://ad.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/show?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&bids=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0">

    I just took at out the middle part.

    Opinions?? Comments??

    Thanks!

    With nothing to click on?

    I think you want to remove the parts in red:

    <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&offerid=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0"><IMG alt="Banner HPage_468x60" border="0" src="http://images.tigerdirect.com/affiliate/banners/Homepage21.gif"></a><IMG border="0" width="1" height="1" src="http://ad.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/show?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&bids=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0">

    Leaving this:

    <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&offerid=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0"><IMG border="0" src="http://images.tigerdirect.com/affiliate/banners/Homepage21.gif"></a>

    Well, I didn't want to put a viable affiliate link and get in trouble.

    I see that you're having me leave the location of the banner at linksynergy.com...

    .../banners/Homepage21.gif">

    But, then you're having me remove this part...

    <IMG border="0" width="1" height="1" src="http://ad.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/show?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&bids=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0">

    This one appears to have my affiliate link/click/account information. Isn't this the more valuable that should remain??

    Rhia: I didn't substitute an image. I just deleted the parts of the code that didn't matter.

    Lyte: It might help if you understood what the various parts of the link do.

    <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&offerid=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0">

    This is the click-through link. That's the most important part. Some ad rotation software only has a place for a link and an image. If that's the case, this the "http:...subid=0" part is what you want to use for the link.

    <IMG alt="Banner HPage_468x60" border="0" src="http://images.tigerdirect.com/affiliate/banners/Homepage21.gif">

    This is the 468x60 banner. You can't really have a banner rotation without that. The alt attribute isn't all that important, so you can delete that if it's causing problems with your banner rotation software. In your original example, you deleted this.

    </a>

    This is the closing tag for the link. If you include the open tag and not the close tag, that can cause problems. In your original example, you deleted this.

    <IMG border="0" width="1" height="1" src="http://ad.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/show?id=xv6*RXzjT*4&bids=1xxxx7.1xxxxxx7&type=4&subid=0">

    This is an impression tracking pixel. If you notice the size, it's only 1x1, so you can't see it. This really isn't necessary. You can leave it out. It just won't track impressions if you leave it out, but that's no big deal. It'll still track clicks and sales. The impression tracking pixel isn't always included. If LinkShare hosts the banner, they track the impression through that. If they don't host the banner (like the one in this example or with text links), they'll add the impression tracking pixel to the code. Many affiliates strip these out as they don't care about impressions.

    Hey Michael,

    Thanks for the greater insight. I thought I knew what was what. I thought it was the link for the hosted image that was the problem. This one...

    <IMG alt="Banner HPage_468x60" border="0" src="http://images.tigerdirect.com/affiliate/banners/Homepage21.gif">

    That's the portion I thought was causing problems and should be removed. I figured I'd just host the art on my server.

    Anyway... I'll try what you suggested... hopefully Link Share won't care that I cropped their code. lol

    Thanks!
