Affiliate marketing company for sale on ebay
    Hi folks,
I just learned that AffiliateAnnouncement is for sale on ebay. Want to buy a 6 year old affiliate marketing company? Starting bid is $25k. Just the client list alone must be worth something:

eBay, Commission Junction, Capital One, Business.com, Hallmark, Barnes & Noble, Expedia, HP, American Express, Priceline.com and more…

Here's a shortcut link for the ebay listing. I got it from their press release. It's not an affiliate link

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Thanks Pete.

It is outside of my budget, but I will be keen to see how much it sells for.

    Founder posted here awhile back:

    http://forum.abestweb.com/search.php?searchid=452636

Says it was acquired by somebody else in 2005.

Didn't know people still used those things.

Average Monthly Revenue: $11,378.00, Profitability/Margins 40%. Monthy profit = $4551.20. 12 months earnings puts a value of $54,614.40 on this website. Some people on this board think a website should be valued at 6 months earnings, I think this figure should be 2 years. If they are lucky they will probably sell for $100k.

Niel Durrant sold it to NetTraction (Greg Sheppard) who sells a network app and service. I seriously doubt the earnings but that's just my $0.02

Very good point. Odds are that quite a bit of the increased earnings came from NetTraction clients, and I wouldn't count on that revenue stream continuing if they sell it.

If their revenue is actually that high, it's odd they would sell for so low. $25,000 is a serious amount, but a steal if their revenue numbers are real.

Someone who actually sold their online business once told me a good calculation is 7 times yearly revenue.

    Still no bid today.

I bet it goes to a big affiliate network like LinkShare or CJ, who can squeeze value out of those contact lists and possibly rebrand the service.

Doubt it, they have the worthwhile contacts already.

as others said, this just smells fishy.

    Hey Guys -

Eder here from NetTraction... The bidding on the eBay auction is currently at $25,000. The reserve is set at $100,000 and offline bids are currently being taken as well.

In regards to something smelling fishy... EVERYTHING smells fishy to you guys.

    $100,000

I used an affiliate directory, once I think, when I was first starting out years ago. Do affiliates still use those things to find merchants?

Better question... Do affiliates use Google to look for affiliate programs?

Some quick search stats I grabbed:

    affiliate program - 5,557.8/day
    free affiliate program - 823.5/day
    online affiliate program - 572.0/day
free online affiliate program - 393.6/day
best free online affiliate program - 359.7/day
pay per click affiliate program - 325.1/day
    adult affiliate program - 170.0/day

This doesnt take into account the targeted searches like "shoes affiliate program,"sunglasses affiliate program," etc. which the directories rank for as well.

I hope that answers your question.

    - Eder

Oh yeah, I use Google to find indys but I don't use directories. Taking a look over some and I remember why.

Maybe the even better question is do affiliates that actually drive sales to merchants use affiliate directories? Don't know, would have to ask the merchants. But I've yet to see a really good one, that's updated on a regular basis.

You know I'm checking out the one that's getting sold, http://affiliateannouncement.com right?

This is a reason I don't use them. I clicked Food & Beverage, only 11 merchants.

    Here's one of them:
    http://www.gourmetdinnermenus.com/as...signupform.php

Do you notice a problem with that one?

Another one I don't even see a sign up link. Let's try another:

    http://eaglesmokes.directtrack.com/

Problem with that one as well:
    ATTENTION ALL CUSTOMERS

Eagle Smokes is now owned by TobaccoTeds.com

You will be redirected in 5 seconds - otherwise click here

TobaccoTeds.com: Cheapest Cigarettes - Quickest Deliveries - Best Service

Stuff like that, is why I don't use them. Can't even be kept up to date.

    One more:

    http://www.cajunclarks.com/cajsaffiliateprogram.htm

Oops, that file could not be found.

Go to the front page and Adsense, wheeee

So that's pretty much been my experience with any affiliate directory I've ever come across. Why I don't use them today.

Just because we're paranoid doesn't mean they're not all out to get us.

So, will you be disclosing what percent of the business comes from NetTraction clients and whether that relationship will continue after the site is sold?

Hi Eder. I don't think it's fishy. It's actually quite brave to stick it out there on ebay and people don't see companies sold this way on ebay very often, so I guess it's natural for some to question it.

    Good luck!

    Regards,
    Peter
