Question How to find out what search terms you rank highly for?
    Hello everyone,

Something occurred to me yesterday. I often hear people saying that their site is #1 in Google (or Yahoo, or MSN) for a certain search term. Is there any way of telling what search terms you may be #1 for other than searching for them yourself and looking at the SERPs?

I understand that a lot of webmasters/SEOs *try* to get ranked as high as possible for a few very specific search terms, so it makes sense for them to keep tabs on the rankings for those search terms, but the nature of my site is such that I get a lot of very random keyword searches bringing visitors in, and I haven't yet really tried to optimize for certain phrases/keywords. My site is fashion-oriented, so I'm finding it hard to choose which keywords to focus on when doing SEO - the visitors I'm trying to draw don't really search for words like "shirt" or "pants".

Anyways, this has become a bit of a novel, but I guess my question is simply: is there a way to tell what search terms you are #1-#5 for in the search engines? A little tool or something out there?

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response - that was quite the list!

Does Wordtracker tell me which keywords my site currently ranks well for without my having to check through the SERPs for all the keywords you listed above, looking for my site? I hope I'm not completely missing the point here....a bit confused :S

Most visitors coming to my site arrive there searching for particular brands, I've noticed....and I'm curious to know whether my site is among the highest-ranking for those brands used as search terms.

Go to Google - or whatever SEs you're interested in - and do searches for the different brands that you have on your site.

If you don't see any of your pages in the top several pages of search results - you have a problem.

Best way to see what you're ranking for is to check your server statistics. You should have something like awstats or Urchin installed. Log in to your control panel and see what keywords people are using to find your site. If you don't have these programs sign up to www.google.com/analytics and use their free software. This is the best way to see what you're ranking for and it even tells you how effective each keyword phrase is. You can search Google for your site by using phrases you think people are using, but unless the phrases are getting you traffic they aren't worth much.

If you'd like to track these phrases over time you can use Digital Point. They have a useful keyword tracking tool that will tell you where you rank for each keyword phrase you enter into the system. You can see if you've gone up or down in ranking with this.

Thanks everyone - I knew there had to be ways that I just wasn't aware of.

Now to see how long it takes before my request for a Google Analytics invite is granted.

If you're looking for a tool to determine if a search term ranks well for your site, check out:

    http://www.iwebtool.com/search_engine_position

This is one i've been using for a while. It allows you to check the first 100 results for both Google and Yahoo. They also have a few other tools on their site.

I have one keyword I rank 4th out of 134,000,000 but that dosn't mean to much.
The most important thing in this regards is how many people actually use this keyword. Getting people to use this keyword is another issue.

There is a program called Web position gold or something like that
I used that like 3-4 years ago
Not sure if they are around but it works by crawling search engines and comes back in a report format.

the $300 program will run 10 terms at a time.
you pay more, you get more key words to run at a single time

    FYI.

Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.... source: Webmaster Guidelines
