In reverse order: if you create a new directory on your server called 'yourname'. Then anyone entering the URL www.myname.com/yourname will be taken to the default document of that directory.
Subdomains are essentially the same thing, but can be presented as http://yourname.myname.com . Most hosting control panels allow you to set subdomains up very easily, but all they do is create a directory called 'yourname' or whatever it is.
