Be careful clicking these links in your referrer stats. I checked to see what the heck these were and my antivirus program went crazy. Luckily it was cleaned up quickly.

Does anyone know if there is a way to block these spammy referrers? Does .htaccess work? Can your hosting service block bots from seeing your stats page? If so, why don't they? Lots of questions on this but very few answers.

I would guess that password protection is the first line of defense, I know some host only require that you visit domain.com/webalizer to see the details....kinda hanging out in the wind that way.

The PR boost would be marginal to say the least, so I don't know how much of an advantage it is to spam in this nature. Keep in mind, that by clicking a reffering url in your stats is as good as telling the spammer EXACTLY where your stats are, as you send the refferal back from your stats page. Try copy link location to a new window or tab to see who they are.

In the post she said to just add the webalizer directory to the robots.txt disallow group and if the search engines don't index the page then they are no good to the spammer.

It's definitely the easiest way to get backlinks from .EDU sites. I saw a bunch when I searched.
