Thumbs up Do you have a MySpace profile?
Have had some young people trying to get me into MySpace. Maybe it doesn't befit a 34 year old businessman to say this, but I have to say it has been fascinating to surf around MySpace and create a beginning to understand why it's so popular!

So, if you have a MySpace thingie, what is it?

I had an ex-gf from many years ago get me on MySpace, we're still friends, so I have one. But I think I need to setup another just for affiliate stuff/business. Since I am an Army brat I also was able to find a few people that I thought I had lost touch with.

I mainly have one because 2 of my friends/neighbors have them and I wanted full access to their profiles. Other than that I don't use it too much. And the URL is really hard to figure out.

I've never even been to the site. I guess I should go check it out one of these days. But I'm shooting for fashionably late to this party... It's not on my to-don't list or anything, just haven't gotten a round tuit.

You're not missing anything. A quote from one of my blog posts:

I'm on MySpace occassionally. Attempted to create one to use for marketing/business purposes, but found it wasn't worth the time/effort.

You don't pay for it. Not sure how much service people expect from something that's free.

There's 900 million reasons why people should expect reasonably good service.

You get what you pay for. The place is pretty much self service. What's 900 million?

edit, at the Google deal. Service for a user and advertiser would have different expectations. It's pretty big because people seem to like it.

definitely a partnership that seems almost like a long-time coming. i'm suprised it took this long for this to happen. im assuming it took a long while to battle out the $$$ portion of this partnership.

They should change that expression to...

    You get what you're worth.

Just because you don't pay money for something, doesn't mean you shouldn't have a fair exchange of value. I'm not referring specifically to myspace, I've really never visited their site. But Trust, as someone who understands how to monetize traffic, would you still argue that myspace visitors can only base their expectations on their actual outlayed cost of use (which is free)?

Each visitor isn't a celebrity endorsement, so I don't mean they're entitled to a limo ride and good meal for signing up, but all the earnings myspace gets is predicated on getting and keeping visitors, and most people understand that - and expect value in return.

Just an opinion, an admittedly ignorant one since I've never been there and assume the service can't be all that bad with all that traffic there...

    "getting and keeping visitors"

I'm sure they do that, they have over 100 million signed up. I'm sure some people have multiple accounts and a percentage that is inactive but it's huge for a reason, Google is partnering with them for a reason.

    Little insight:
    http://www.thevirtualhandshake.com/b...worked-culture

Lots of interesting facts in there, like MySpace is Google's #1 referrer.

"I haven't seen a service this bad, with this many people, since AOL. "

Actually I might have read that wrong. Not sure if he means customer service, getting a reply because a problem reported. Or service meaning MySpace as a whole. As a whole, the numbers speak for themselves.

LOL! That's a twist that I didn't expect. That's what I get for going in and screwing with my profile today. Thanks for letting me know before too many people saw it.

I actually just hooked up with a couple of friends from high school on there! I went to school with Mike Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor on Smallville) and Justin Root (another actor). I haven't talked to them forever...until I came across their Myspace profiles and emailed them.

Great...one more reason for me to waste time online!!

bumpaw, they say "curiosity kill the cat", so I just went there for the first time and I saw that you're right.

But, I am not making this post just to confirm that you're right, I am making this post to say that I am in shock.

If in order to have a space in there for free, we have to post all that personal information for everyone in the world to see for free, I think I am going to pass on the offer.

    .
    .

I have read somewhere before that, MySpace was a very popular site with teenagers, now I can see why.

Maybe I am too old for my own good, but there is no way that I would ever post all that personal info into one place for all to see, just to get a free space on any website.

I'm sure they do that, they have over 100 million signed up.
    If that number is true:

I wonder how many millions are one day over thirty?

    and .....

I wonder how many millions are posting their true personal profile?

    ----------

Maybe I am reading something wrong somewhere, but so far I don't see how I can benefit on any way by having an account on MySpace for myself, maybe it's because I am more than two days over thirty, maybe it's because I am a marketer and I don't lie on my profile, or maybe it's because I still am too honest to take advantage of some real opportunitie out there.

    But....... Who knows?

Maybe one day I might wake up and be forced to just say: WTF

    I agree with Mr. Sal

MySpace facilitates identity theft and the disclosure could possibly lead to other problems.

You don't have to post all that personal info, you can put what you want.

Myspace is pretty crap. 70% are under 18, 28% (and growing) are only there to spam the teenagers about their cam sites and 2% are people over 18. Okay, I do enjoy my little wine group, when the site actually functions, so one more 30-something...

That Google news is a little frightening - Google's #1 referrer?!?! I'm glad I'm not doing a lot of advertising on Google! A friend and I ran a social networking site similar to Myspace, but catered to a social niche/music genre. The user base grew like crazy, was loyal to the site and generated millions and millions of page views, ad impressions, etc, but actual revenue was pathetic. In our experience, kids don't take direct action online while socializing. They click, but almost never buy, so unless Google advertisers are after a lot of unmonetized clicks, where's the value?

The fact that the dominant ads on Myspace are for smiley central type stuff makes me think there's not a lot of commerce going on, but Google may be banking on the kids growing up. Seems like an expensive gamble.
