    Question Picking a Cloak
I'm working on a bunch of pages and I'll probably FTP them en masse at a future point (the sooner the better). The pages have lots of affiliate links, so I've been thinking about cloaking.

I am wondering which method to choose? I would like to hide the affiliate link and I'd like to fool the visitor looking at the status bar. The only problem is that some methods such as a javascript method might "fool" a search engine into thinking I have less to offer than I do.

Someone might suggest a JavaScript Mouseover in order to hide the affiliate url, such as the one described here:
    http://www.free-webmaster-tools.com/...iliate-url.htm
However, I wonder if javascript is used to encode the url, wouldn't that affect the way a search engine might see my page? I could think of certain times when it might be beneficial for a search engine to read the url.

This page offers suggestions with detailed explanations
    http://bontragerconnection.com/libra...of_links.shtml

    Here's a PHP how-to:
    http://www.stevedawson.com/article0006.php

And last but not least, I found a page that encourages me to download:
a FREE little software program called Ed's Link Cloaker which generaterates the above code with the affiliate link and StatusBar text you specify. source
hmmmmm, I'm not sure if I should trust a download from that site or not -- I'm afraid of spyware.

So I'm asking the experts (YOU there reading this post) which of these methods should I use? I would like to hide some links but not to the extent that a search engine sense that a page is half empty or lacking in information.

Which of the above would be easy to incorporate into my site while performing with consistent results?

Please tell me which method I should use.

    Thanks in advance.

The following JS code will open the link in a new window and hid the url AND ALSO LET YOU SET THE FONT AND SIZE AND ETC.

    <a style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #0000FF; font-weight: bold" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #0000FF; font-weight: bold" onMouseOver="window.status='PUT WHAT YOU WANT HERE' ; return true" onMouseOut="window.status='Done'"onclick="x=window.open('PUT THE AFFILIATE LINK THAT YOU WANT OPENED HERE')" href="#">
PUT WHAT YOU WANT THE LINK TO SAY THAT THEY CLICK ON HERE</a>

Is this better than a redirect with htaccess? If she has a lot of links on a page, won't the page load slower. I have friends still on dialup, even worse, AOL dialup.

MoneyBusiness, why did you delete your post?

I was looking at the other posts and then I was going to take a look at your post.

I was going to address your post but someone PM'd me so I "went off the forum" into my wonderful world of PMs to deal with the PM.

I wish you would leave your post up. I didn't know I was playing a game of response tag and that my time to respond was limited

As far as cloaks go, I personally prefer the simple solid black with a large hood that will keep the cold breeze out of your face. For fancy occasions, a nice black satin trim is always nice and you can add a gold pin to use as the closure.

A zip in liner can turn a simple cloak into real comfort during all weather. If you are going to be outside a lot a couple of coatings of Scotch Guard are well worth doing.

Will not slow your pages down. You are using them on your own site - not to load information from other sites such as GoldenCan or CJ.

I use them all the time and they don't affect page load at all.

When your customer clicks on the link the merchant site loads in a new frame just the same as if you used target="_blank".

Thanks everyone for the great replies

I'll have to see if I have Apache server. I have the following plan (not an affiliate url):
    http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hos...op&__lf=Static

It's called 1&1 Business and I still get lost in terms of what is available, what I can do, and what would be better

BurgerBoy, thanks -- you're a great guy -- no wonder you are a Chick Magnet & Junior Smilie Master

SSanf, I've got a "New Age" side to me too -- I just don't reveal it too often on this forum Yeah, I think cloaks are cool and if I knew how to cloak an url -- that would be cool too
I have to try out the suggestions.

I would be very afraid of a program that "generaterates" anything. Just what exactly is "generatarating" anyway?

Is it possible to cloak an url connected to a product image?
I am experiencing difficulty with this.

Is cloaking only for a text link?

    Thanks

Btw, does anyone use TinyURL.com? The site says:
    Hide your affiliate URLs

Are you posting something that you don't want people to know what the URL is because it might give away that it's an affiliate link? Then you can enter a URL into TinyURL, and your affiliate link will be hidden from the visitor, only the tinyurl.com address and the ending address will be visible to your visitors.

    http://tinyurl.com/
    I took BurgerBoy's suggestion:
    <a style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #0000FF; font-weight: bold" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #0000FF; font-weight: bold" onMouseOver="window.status='PUT WHAT YOU WANT HERE' ; return true" onMouseOut="window.status='Done'"onclick="x=window.open('PUT THE AFFILIATE LINK THAT YOU WANT OPENED HERE')" href="#">
PUT WHAT YOU WANT THE LINK TO SAY THAT THEY CLICK ON HERE</a>

    and deleted the font specifications:

<a onMouseOver="window.status='PUT WHAT YOU WANT HERE' ; return true" onMouseOut="window.status='Done'"onclick="x=window.open('PUT THE AFFILIATE LINK THAT YOU WANT OPENED HERE')" href="#">
PUT WHAT YOU WANT THE LINK TO SAY THAT THEY CLICK ON HERE</a>

    On this part:
    <a onMouseOver="window.status='PUT WHAT YOU WANT HERE' ;
    What is
    'PUT WHAT YOU WANT HERE'
? Is that meant for an url? for an image? for text?

I still haven't mastered the cloaking

Let's say that the url is to a BIG RED WIDGET.

Replace PUT WANT YOU WANT HERE with BIG RED WIDGET or whatever you want it to say.

Is that what you wanted to know ??

    Dad,

Well - It only took you a year to catch that and as far as I know you are the first one to say anything about it.

A misteak is the same thing as a kow.

Soon I will give up on cloaking and just paste the urls "as is" because I can't get the product images to show with the cloaking.

Sometimes I wonder why the networks can't supply pre-cloaked urls?

Other than the "onmouseover="window.status=, I never bother with any other cloaking, what you see is what you get!

    I have nothing to hide!

Love me, or leave me, but if you click on my adsense on the way out, I might send you a post card on Xmas, if I have made enough for the stamp.

    My only concerns are:
    • People seeing the urls & deciding not to click due to weird urls
    • I've read some articles about "commission substitution" -- some other affiliate switching #s
    • Norton and other anti-virus/protection systems deleting the cookies or eating cookies or something
    • [Fill in the blanks]

That has held me back in terms of developing web pages.

I'm at the point where I am better off just pasting the urls as is

In the past when I didn't let the "naked urls" be an obstacle, I created pages so quickly that I got in trouble with my family because I was [supposedly] addicted or something to the Internet [oooOOOh]

Are "naked urls" really a "naked put?" ("Naked Put" is a term in future options strategy.)

I've tried various methods of cloaking but I "Can't Get No Satisfaction"

If cloaking were a stock, I'd short it

I'd still like to thank anyone who tried to help me in this matter.
    Your efforts were appreciated

    "Picking a Cloak"

I prefer black or dark brown after Samhain until Beltane. Then, any light spring or summer color will do.
