    Need Hosting Recommendations.
I'm looking for a good dependable hosting service.

Lots of good ones out there and a few bad ones. Just don't want to waste my time on a bad one.

I want one that does NOT allow adult or porn.

If anyone could recommend one that they have used and been happy with, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks.

I use alentus for my dedicated server and westhost (Virtual Private servers) for my shared hosting accounts. (The only solution for any shared hosting plan, if you ask me

lots of host allow you to self reffer the sale so you get free hosting more or less. It really depends what your looking for one domain or 20, windows or linux. A good resource for checking hosting is hosthideout.com

You might consider checking around this board and finding fellow ABWers who are in the business of hosting. I see banners in a number of places.

Lunarpages has been great for me
I've used Lunarpages for several years now and have been very happy with them. They continually offer more services for less money. They'll email me to let me know that they've increased bandwidth or lowered rates, or added a new feature. And they always reply quickly via email - and I can also get through to them via phone or IM.

For only $6.95 a month I get a ton of features that allow me to run several database-driven websites with numerous email accounts, blogs, forums, the works. Oh, and did I mention the free domain for life? You get one per year.

but Lunarpages only provide 1G space at first, for more (as they said 5G in ad.), u need to apply - don't like this way.

anyone recommend both ASP and PHP hosting?

If you want to spend a few bucks more (than the usual cheap hosts out there), then check out: www.bluehost.com. Been using them for a long time, and never had any problems. Their list of features/add-ons/specs are wonderful: http://www.bluehost.com/tell_me_more.html

    Good luck!

What are your bandwidth and space requirements? Just watch out for oversellers.

Get a dedicated server. Shared hosting has become so cheap that nobody feels like they owe you any support anymore.
The shared hosting business is full of crooks and idiots that either blatantly lie to you or give you such horrible service that you eventually leave.
Hosting companies have gotten horrible at offerng any kind of decent service.

I am not sure if this is allowed, but a good source for finding hosts is webhostingtalk.com. Not only do they have an "offers" forum, but you can usually find out about any given host somewhere in the forum, much like finding out about affiliate networks here at ABW. You can find some good deals. I found a host there to help with our dedicated servers and now been with them for 3 years (started with shared reseller account, and moved up to dedicated).

All I've ever run is unmanaged dedicated boxes. Yes it is a steep learning curve if you do not happen to be a Linux guru by birth, but the flexibility and cost is second to none if you have a significant web presence. I use ev1servers.net mostly, although I have another server with rackspace (.com or .co.uk). These are especially nice because despite having root access you also get support if you need it.

I think pair.com is a pretty good host, but they have issues with the ability to go up a level in the folders so you can browse other peoples files. I have never had any downtime issues with them in over 3 years.

I have 2 VPS servers with servint.net and love them. 4 ips per box included, $1 each extra ip per month. The cost is more, around 49 a month for the first and 44 for the second but I am hosting many sites there so the cost per site is only a few bucks each/month.

Regardless of what you choose I would go with a place that offers a dedicated IP just so you do not become associated with the other sites on the server. I once had a few sites banned on Yahoo because someone was pretty shady on the same ip as me. Others will argue that shared ips are good for hiding when you do shady things... interested in hearing others thoughts on the issue.

I agree with the dedi server. I use servermatrix and since I don't know a lot about admin I farm that out to another company. I get the benefits of doing what I want on the server and have never had a problem.

The other option you may consider is VPS server. in the range of $30-50 you can get a VPS + Control panel (Plesk & Cpanel). The good thing about VPS is the fact that VPS has some portion of guaranteed resourses. It means that people who share the server with you cannot consume all server resources making your site down. That's why people prefere VPS to shared hosting. For the low price you can get all the power to control things you get with dedicated server (root access, ability to compuile your custom programs and make custom configurations) + guaranteed resources.

Most of the $100/mo dedicated offers are white boxes. It means that they are made from the parts designed for desktop computers and not for the servers when VPS providers usually use serious server hardware with 8+ GB memory, RAID1+0, etc.
And such VPS platforms like Virtuozzo and OpenVZ allow you to burst and consume all free server resourses in case you need it. So having VPS with 256 guaranteed RAM ran of Dual CPU box could be more advantageous then having a dedicated Celeron box with 512 Mb of RAm because you can burst up to 2 Gb of RAM and use 2 CPU, etc.

In case you just want more reliability than shared hosting but your site is not big enough for dedicated VPS could be a good cost -effective option to consider.

Ive used westnic.net and I have the R-2 acct. I did the 2 year prepay back in 4/05 (brave I know) and renew in April 2007.

    I started with..

R-2, 4800 MB disk space, 80 GB bandwidth $239.40 per month 24 months not bad for $9.95/mo and about the best I could find in 2005

here is the kicker for me...
    ===============
    from westnic site:
All premium reseller hosting packages have been upgraded! We've doubled disk space and bandwidth and also added free dedicated SSL. All customers who purchased RS-1, RS-2 or RS-3 hosting plan are eligible for FREE upgrade. Please submit support ticket with your domain name and server ID.
    ===============

so this means my 4800 MB disk space, 80 GB bandwidth $9.95/mo R-2 package is now a whopping 28GB disk space, 600 GB bandwidth

I cant ask for better, I think it renews at SAME rate too.

    Thx WestNIC
