I just started to seriously use Google ad words after Aol and Overture parted their ways. The ROI stunk prior to the Aol deal, but now it's picking up a bit.

Here's some stats for a sub-site I made just for the Google ad words:

    Amount earned - CJ

    $724.45 70 93 1,864 10,455 0.178 69.29 0.087 $38.86

    Amount earned - Value Click

    $128

    Amount earned - Websponsors

    Total Revenue: $ 158.60

Also, I have in house sponsors that report monthly (I know I know, but I trust them), so I am going to guess around $200 for the Google sub-site so far. Just a guess.

And the most important stat - newsletter subscribers:

Number of subscribers, grouped by day
    (for the month May 2002)

    YEAR MONTH DAY NUMBER
    02 05 01 128
    02 05 02 61
    02 05 03 49
    02 05 04 56
    02 05 05 42
    02 05 06 57
    02 05 07 104
    02 05 08 86
    02 05 09 121
    02 05 10 136
    02 05 11 118
    02 05 12 139
    02 05 13 124
    02 05 14 161
    02 05 15 88

Now, here's what I spent for the Google Adword traffic:

    Summary for May. 01, 2002 to May. 14, 2002
All Campaigns Clicks Impr. CTR Avg. CPC Cost Avg. Pos
    Campaign #6 1225 49589 2.4% $0.05 $61.25 1.3
    Campaign #7 70 2704 2.5% $0.05 $3.50 2.0
    Campaign #8 2 669 0.2% $0.05 $0.10 2.4
    Campaign #9 227 15116 1.5% $0.05 $11.35 1.1
    Campaign #10 48 8172 0.5% $0.05 $2.40 2.9
    Campaign #11 36 4287 0.8% $0.05 $1.80 2.4
    Campaign #12 7700 1075896 0.7% $0.05 $385.00 2.7
    Campaign #13 145 36002 0.4% $0.05 $7.25 3.6
    Campaign #14 11 475 2.3% $0.05 $0.55 2.1
    Campaign #15 32 1230 2.6% $0.05 $1.60 1.2
    Campaign #1 - Deleted 9 405 2.2% $0.05 $0.45 1.2
    Campaign #2 - Deleted 1 30 3.3% $0.05 $0.05 2.8
    Campaign #3 - Deleted 0 0 - - $0.00 -
    Campaign #4 - Deleted 2 968 0.2% $0.05 $0.10 2.3
    Campaign #5 - Deleted 1 595 0.1% $0.05 $0.05 2.6
    Overall 9509 1196138 0.7% $0.05 $475.45 2.6

Now I know it's not the ROI we got spoiled on early in Overture's days (spend a dollar get $10 back lol), but I think adwords is effective.

The thing I LOVE about adwords is you can target US/English speaking traffic only. I realize there is money in foreign traffic also, but most of my advertisers only pay for US traffic.

I know it would take a considerable amount of time, but if anyone would care to post his or her stats, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Adam,

Yeah, prior to Aol - Google, my stats looked like yours. What's your experience this month, or have you dropped em?

Mussels taste good dipped in butter also.

By the way, I sarted to push Uproar.com because they have a nice tower banner that really catches peoples eyes, however, upon trying Uproar myself, I found that they try to download Gator on your visitors. That was only a month or so ago, so chances are, by pushing Uproar, you are also pushing Gator.....

On the sales side, my experience so far with Google adwords has been disappointing.

However, AdWords is GREAT for testing ad copy. For example, I bought some text ad space in an ezine -- not the exact same format as AdWords, but text all the same.

But before buying the ezine space, I tested text ads on Google Adwords and improved clickthrough from 0.9% to 2.3% -- guess which copy I then used in the ezine?

Total ad test? About $25. Where else can you get such cheap testing with real live testers?

On one test, I even used the text in a banner ad and got a 2.0% click-through on a 468x60 banner (with 15,000 impressions). For a generic banner (which this was), that's the best click-through I've gotten in YEARS.
