I have had a game section for kids up for probably close to 2 years. I don't make much money from it but I have left it up and update it every now and then. Hmmm I better do an update. Anyways, today I received an email complaining about a picture I have of Bart Simpson Mooning! In the 2 years I have never once received any complaints about the picture.

    Here is the email:

As a parent I am upset to see a Simpson character mooning people who visit your site. Is this an example you wish children to follow? I am sure your creative minds can come up with something which is funny to all age levels. Children do not need another bad example before their eyes.

Anyone have any thoughts on this. Does the pic stay or go?

I would pull the image. Not that I feel it's a big deal but imagine this person spreads the word and suddenly you've lost a dozen or so potential customers. On the other hand let's say you pull the image and email them back with a kind statement and they tell an extra dozen friends about your site and how you did this etc.

Ummm, isn't this exactly something Bart would do (and hasn't Homer done it - I forget which episode(s))?

Really, if you want to get technical about it (and have no sense of humor whatsoever), the Simpsons is a bad example for kids and adults alike. Anybody who gets upset over a graphic of Bart mooning would, logically, be upset by the whole show and they should be writing to Matt Groening, not you.

Frankly, I think Disney characters are even worse examples because they're so untrue to life and promote unrealistic expectations of the world.

    I say the image stays.

I say keep the image! It isn't offensive or a bad example IMO. The only person that complained is what % of your customers? 0.0001% maybe? Do you think this complainer actually supports your site? They probably are to frightened to use their credit card on the internet.

Maybe if you are lucky this person will complain to their friends about your site and add some additional viral traffic from people that aren't so uptight.

Actually I'd suggest your main problem is not Bart's bottom (I have a pair of socks with Bart's bum and the text "Feast your eyes on this" - they were a gift, OK?) but Fox asking you to pull it on the 0.01% chance that anyone from Fox will ever see it.

Hey I have a picture of a dead mouse on one of my sites

You have a parent worried about a fanny, but not copyright isues, lol...

I'd pull it. I LOVE the Simpsons, but I don't think they're appropriate for kids.

And mooning is not appropriate for kids, either...

Much better suited to the high school students.

Lol Haiko, I was thinking about emailing an animation of me mooning. But I wouldn't be that mean to my worse enemy!

I think the problem I have about pulling it is that when I show my nephews or nieces who were like 8-9 years old that laughed histericaly. Same with my kids and their friends. I enjoy watching kids have a good laugh. Something I don't think they get enough of these days of everything has to be politacaly correct. For some reason I just don't have a problem with Bart showing his fanny! I'm still deciding what to do though.

I was thinking about putting a poll up and let my visitors decide but if I put it in the kids section that wouldn't be fair becasue they would all vote it stays. Maybe an idea might be to ask on my main game page and see what the results are. Hmmmm!

Elbow, Is it a kids site???

If you think the kids would want it to stay, and your site is geared towards kids, and the image really isn't obscene, then, really, I think it should stay! Parents can be so ridiculously stuffy and fun-squelching sometimes. Ugh. Grown-ups.

But then, I am a professional writer and believe that the First Amendment is the real golden rule. So my opinions are generally going to come from that end of the spectrum.

The *first thing* that came to mind was to send her a copy of that very pic as your response!

Either that or send her a detailed explanation of the "back" button.

Seriously now...Personally I'd ignore the email and leave the pic up. Uptight um, "busybodies" like that can go to The Hot Place. If she doesn't give up and go away, keep on ignoring IT until IT does get tired of emailing. Just be another "big faceless website"...email nonresponse is typical of many sites, go ahead and leave her wondering if you ever even read her message!

I have a few reasons for responding like that but this really isn't the place to get into it...suffice to say that I have a great dislike of those who would pretend that something fairly tame like Bart's butt is some kind of a crime!

I don't think you should take it down because of the email.

But Dynamoo has a point - something to consider, if the parent's a real b!#ch and wants to make trouble, she may point it out to Fox... so if you are going to leave it up make sure it is Fair Use.

Keep it. Its not a bad example for kids. Its a fine example. The art of mooning has to be nurtured early and encouraged. It pisses off all the right people.

Thanks all for the feedback! I think it stays for now. I look at it as one complaint in 2 years. I am a pretty strict parent and I keep a pretty good eye on my kids when they are online. They also know I can track what they have been doing so that keeps them away from most of the stuff they would like to get to online. I'm sure they do have their times when they slip something by me but I think that is part of the growing up process.

Heyder, I don't like to loose any ptential customers and I get what your saying but I think it has to stay just for the fact that IMO I don't see it as being too offensive for kids. It's a funny picture for kids and as stated above I think kids need a good laugh these days.

Cedric, I do agree that the Simpsons although one of my favorite shows of all times is not suitible for all ages. As for a moon from innocent little Bart I don't agree. But thanks for your feedback. Hey, how about a moon from Mickey Mouse?? Would that work?

    Wetzco, I agree!

Janiss, I also believe in the first amendment as a golden rule. I tried to make my dicision based on whether this is something that would be too offensive to children of any age group and I kept coming up with No! I like to consider myself a decent parent and this is something that I would let any of my children see. So I guess this is my way of expression, lol. I mean jeeez I did take down the picture of Bart flipping everyone off. It's a joke so save the flaming all. I wouldn't put that on a kids site.

    Leader,

quote:
The *first thing* that came to mind was to send her a copy of that very pic as your response!

First thing that came to my mind early in the morning also! I still haven't decided whether or not to email her back. Knowing me I probably will and make it even worse. Of course I would be polite and all.

    Dynamoo and Eaglefire,

That crossed my mind when I put it up wayyy back whenever about Fox. Hopefully they have a sense of humor. If not I would obviously pull it. I think I am more worried about her complaining to my host than Fox though.

    Icicle,

Ummm sarcasm??? It obviously pissed off someone after 2 years. I guess I don't get whether you think it should be pulled or not.

Anyways,Thanks all for the great feedback on BIG BAD BARTS BUTT!

I took a course some years ago that had a real impact on me. One of the things I learned was that a lot of people will just leave a store without buying something because something or someone in that place of business, has turned them off, they won't say anything they will just walk out the door, or just won't come back to the restaurant, you know what I mean.

Maybe its the ones that didn't email you, and that just left the page without bothering to voice their negative opinion, or buy anything, you should wonder about.

    Just a thought.

Cedric, lol! Hmmm, could be good publicity.

    Abigail,

that is a good point you make. But, the kids site was one of the first ones I started. It wasn't to make money but really to give them a safe place to go with safe links. That is the truth. Then I ended up throwing some affiliate links on it. I also use to promote it in the ppc engines even though I was loosing a decent amnt of money on it just so the kids could find it. It got to where it was costing too much so I had to pull the ppc's and I did feel bad about doing it. Not like its a great site or anything but the kids like it. I would receive on average about 20 emails week about it. 99 percent good.

I haven't had the time lately to do much with it. It really needs to be overhalled big time. I tried to talk my daughter into taking it over but that lasted about a day and a half.

The sites not there to really make any money. I really just built it as a place for kids to go to. I also have a webtv section that doesn't make squat. That one is more of a hassle than all my pages together. At first there were alot of game sites for webtv users but now there isn't much. Talk about complaints. I get pounded with emails saying where are the games for prizes. There are only a couple of sites left that work with webtv.

Oh, for pity's sake! As if there aren't enough real problems in the world to go around. Leave the picture up and hit the delete button on that e-mail. Let them go find something of real import to whine about.

    GameBoy,
And for all the reasons you have given, then you should leave it up.

I understood it was an income generating site, visited by adults buying things for children. I was wrong.

If its just about the kids, for kids, go with your instincts.

I'm late joining this thread, but I thought the picture was tacky. What exactly are you trying to say by having it on your site?

You claim you want to create a safe place for kids, yet by using the picture you are in effect endorsing some appallingly bad manners. It just doesn't add up.

Elisabeth, I'm not trying to really say anything. Just trying to make the kids smile.

quote:
you are in effect endorsing some appallingly bad manners.

No, I'm trying to let kids be kids in an adult world that somehow forgot what it was like to be a kid with all the politacaly correct crap that goes on now. When a kid is suspended for playing and pretending to shoot a friend with just his finger like as in playing cowboys and indians when we were younger. When a kid is expelled for bringing in a toy gun an inch or so long which is this big ------ . When a first grader gets in trouble for kissing a girl on the cheek and they call it sexual harassment, when a 5 year old kindergartener gets suspended for dressing as a firefighter for halloween because he brought in a plastic toy axe.

The list goes on and on and on. Maybe us adults need to start growing up or better yet start lightening up.

You're right that there's a lot of dark stuff out there, but modelling bad manners is hardly the way to improve things.

    GB,
I say pull the image and then put it back up in a month after she's forgotten about your site. Or maybe you could move the image into a "secret kid's only zone". That way if she or some other person emails you about the image, you could say "Well what were you doing in a secret kid's only zone?!?!?"

OR you could just leave the image up and not worry about it. If we took everything that offended everybody off the net, would we even have an internet?

    Leave the image up.
It's your site & thus, you should determine what is or is not shown.

IMO, it's a bit of harmless fun.
I wouldn't worry about Fox coming after you either. There'd be a million other sites that'd go before yours.
