Neighbor's CompUSA & Toshiba experience

I'm hesitant to post this because it's not my experience, but I'm in shock that this happened to my neighbor & thought it would serve as a good example as to why you should back up your data...
So, their Toshiba laptop was having problems keeping the A/C adaptor connected due to a loose jack or something. They took it into CompUSA & because it was a hardware issue, they declined the image backup & the employee agreed w/ them that it wasn't necessary. Since it was still under warrantee, CompUSA sent it back to Toshiba... in Japan. Once there, they reformatted the hard drive w/out asking & w/out reason. My neighbors have lost their pictures, finance records, school work, and who knows whatever else that can't be replaced. They checked w/ someone who said that they might be able to recover 99% of the data, but it would cost $2500 to find out...
Back up your stuff!!
