My ISP closed down so I signed on with another large Aussie ISP. I configured everything and thought I'd check the new email addy, surprise, 2 juicy pieces of porn spam!
I complained and received the standard "mom's and pop's" reply, so I complained again and received a more indepth tap dance!
Would it be reasonable to assume they are selling off addy's...and even though their tos/privacy says "They will send offers and communications from them and their partners but offer their valued customers a way to opt out!"
There is no opting in (save in the tos) and no opt out on their site....
I want blood...another 4 porn spams just came through and this is a major player in the aussie isp war

Sign up the ISP management and tech e-mail addresses to all the Freebee programs and surf to earn deals along with those same porn Ads. Once they start getting a 100+ spamms a day they might listen.

MJ, your ISP should not be sharing your information with ANYBODY!!!. I thought that would be a given for any ISP that has some respect for their clients.

If you have a simple email address you may have been victim of a brute force spam attack (where they just send to aaron@isp.com, ann@isp.com, arnold@isp.com, etc) but I wouldn't think that would be likely so quickly.
While it looks very likely your new isp is selling you into spam slavery it's also possible it's a rogue employee - as the dotcoms went under the FC site used to say "time to start stealing shit" - that included member databases. If an about-to-be-ex-employee can get fifty bucks for a CD full of email addresses that nobody will miss, why not? To a lesser extent the same is true of not-about-to-be-ex-employees.
What I would do, since you just signed up and haven't gotten established with the new email address is change it. If you were using something simple like MJ@isp.com, change it to MJ7ZT3@isp.com - complicated email addresses are less likely to get hit by brute force and dictionary attacks.
If you get another spam right away in the new email address, cancel that isp - and be sure to tell them why. Also tell your replacement isp why you switched.

Hey MJ,
Tell me.. this isn't bigpond is it.
I hope not because I'm signing up with their adsl service during June (YAY!).
Telstra is the only place that offers adsl in my area, so I have to go with them.

I still have to keep my (frequently spammed) dial-up account though, because that email is the contact for all my domain registrations.

Just give me a Yay or Nay as to if your probs are with bigpond, because it will influence my decision about signing up.

thanks
Pete

Go get 'em alright It's highly unlikely it's a brute force as there are only 3 other people in Oz I know of with my name, and they were named after me, so it's not the sort of name you'll find in a naming book.

The ISP was recommended by a PC mag so I thought I'd give them a try and purchased a three month prepaid disc.

The online privacy issue is very hot in Oz,
so yesterday I passed the info onto some investigative journalists with the message "pick up a pre-paid disc, setup your addy and wait for the spam"
This is one of the Top 5 ISP's in Australia!!!

Another possibility is if they have a member's directory. MSN does that and defaults you to letting everybody see your email address - by the time most people find out they need to change that, it's too late.

No Pete it's not BigPond I've bigpond too and I've never received one bit of spam from them, so rest easy.

I only joined this other mob because I like to have two ISP's, just in case I can't get online for some reason.
My other isp was dingoblue, who by the way were fantastic, sadly have closed down and I can't get DSL up here yet.

jaybat, there's no member's directory.
For the time being, I'm not going to download any mail from them...lol! they may choke on their own spam!

Mike, you are evil...lol! sounds like a great idea!

It is possible they recycled the username you're using - that sort of thing happens on Hotmail a lot.

Possible, but unlikely I'll let the journo's do their bit and I just won't download any mail from their server.
No skin off my nose, I haven't given the addy to anyone so I'm not expecting any mail

I'm sorry I don't quite understand your problem. Why do you use your ISP for email? Doesn't your host offer spam filters setup thru your domains email addresses that you set up?

When Excite@Home cable ISP service closed down and was locally taken over by Comcast.net the spamms never missed a beat. One day after the e-mail server switchover 900 million spamms passed through the new servers. Chocked the system big time! Seems all the e-mail marketers just wrote a simple script changing the old user names to the Name@comcast.net rather than name@home.com. Some real p*ssed hacker one day will map out all the spoofed e-mail IP# host servers and launch a rotating DOS attack on them all. I'll drink a toast to that guy.
