    Angry Webservices Crashed?
Since yesterday evening, I've been unable to access the new webservices.
    The latest error is this:
Service description 'http://api.cj.com/wsdl/supportService.wsdl' can't be loaded: 404 Not Found
Service description 'http://api.cj.com/wsdl/productSearchService.wsdl' can't be loaded: 404 Not Found

    Anyone know what's happening?

    http://api.cj.com/wsdl/supportService.wsdl - 404
    http://api.cj.com/wsdl/linkSearchService.wsdl - 404
    http://api.cj.com/wsdl/advertiserSearchService.wsdl - 404

    Hi Chris,

    Yeh, it's down.

Any luck with your charity link? Curios to see your list.

Which link - the modified demo.html?
    Tuan,

All my links are "charity" links (www.ismycharity.com is my only domain right now).

Are you referring to the link I posted to get the list of advertisers? -or are you referring to a list of my charities?

The whole shootin' match is currently down on CJ's end as far as webservices goes, so the link is non-functional. But at last check there were 994 advertisers.

I would've PM-ed you, but I currently am still marked "NEW" on abestweb.

No, it's not you, it's CJ. The entire api.cj.com server is down.

    Hi Chris,

The advertisers list. I was interested because I believe my list is only for advertisers w/ existing datafeed.

BTW, I'd started a discussion over there to try to avoid this kind of stuff in the future.

    Thanks for your reply.

What affiliate in their right mind would use tools produced and hosted by a company that is unable to process payments and report sales simultaneously?

One who has weigh the risk and return.

I am also meticulously critical of CJ.

On the other hand, for a momentary opportunity to distance myself from the established market, i'll take the risk.

it's a shame to see this network run new services like this with the same efficiency as their dns resolution.

Following all of the great successes we've seen...IMHO I'll wait for all of the post release beta testing to fix the bugs

A web service like this one, which only provides flat data, is nothing more than a glorified database connection. So instead of trying to pull data from them real-time and display to your users why not:

    1. cache the data in your database
    2. serve the cached data to your users
    3. re-sync your cached data with the remote data regularly

The upside is that your users never see connection errors because of your 3rd party's inability to manage a webservice feed. The downside is that your data won't be real-time. Though if you were to re-synchonize on user request (when the service is available) who will notice the difference?

It's only flat if you look at it that way. Since there are more then one call, relationships can be built. You can also mash it up with other data and no one will ever know it came from a flat file.

    Tuan,

Web services can provide some useful functionality, but relying on that functionality makes you dependent on that web service. Almost all web service functions can be reproduced locally, avoiding the reliance on the web service itself, such as; merging data with other feeds, ranking products against user requests, re-categorizing information, etc. Though if you want to use one of their custom functions to retrieve some well-treated data over raw data you can still do so, just cache it instead of pulling it real-time.

The main point I was trying to make was that caching the content puts YOU in control. Relying on the web service puts CJ in control. I'd rest better at night knowing that my website will continue to serve my patrons with affiliate branded product links whether CJ's webservice is working or not and caching their data is one sure way of accomplishing that goal.

It looks like it's in and out just now. A bit wobbly.

Tobius, that's the plan but slightly different priorities, use the live data 1st then the cache is used only when needed if the service is down. Unless the api gets too heavy in restricting the calls to the service then use the cache more often, updating every few hours.
And I don't believe it's flat either once you've done a bit of origami on it.

    Hi Tobius,

Thanks for the discussion, I really appreciate it.

You're absolutely correct as to being at the mercy of the service for the delivery of your web pages, I don't sleep much as it is.

On the other hand, and in a way another ball park, it SHOULD BE EXPECTED that if you're going to participate at this level then you need to maintain a level of reliability. It would be a very unfortunate thing for CJ/VC if this wasn't carried through on par with others providing web services.

As for myself, i deal with this by having my app email me whenever there's a missed call to amazon or eBay. So it occurs throughout the day and a few hundreds comes through once in awhile overnight, but that's it.

    Thanks again,
    Tuan
