Just got the email below so I need to find a good free alternative to Hitbox for all my sites. So far - I am very disappointed with the alternatives. Good Search Keywords/Referral URL tracking is a necessity.

Suggestions?

Okay, you could try www.addfreestats.com - which has what you need with the downside that is will slow the loading of your pages considerably and often freezes Netscape browsers.

My main recommendation is - yet again - AdvLogger from www.perlonline.com . The free version will only show 500 referrers per day, but by a strange coincidence they offer a pro version for only $29.99 (one-off fee) and, by an even stranger coincidence, here is my affiliate link
http://www.perlonline.com/cgi-bin/af....cgi?markymark

I seriously recommend this for everybody's site. As far as tracking referrers goes, it is the best script I have ever come across and in my line of work I have tried everything. I personally use it far more than my preferred log file analysis tools (HappyLog and NetTracker, in case you are interested).

You can try awstats from sourceforge.net like I do for free but you need to install it and need access to your server logs..

Odd, I didn't get that message from Hitbox (they have the right e-mail address listed in my account), and there's no interstitial on my Hitboxed site. Maybe they're only sticking certain sites with interstitials?

wentzco, has the interstitial actually started running yet?

I am not sure if the exit pages have started. I did get a couple of pop-up windows today but they didn't appear immediately from leaving one of my sites so its possible it may be a "timed" exit window or may have come from an unrelated site in another browser window.

I have 13-14 seperate accounts with Hitbox for seperate sites so I don't know which site they are talking about either. I noticed recently on new accounts I have opened with them that they state they "may serve interstitial ads on occasion" when you get to the banner selection page (Maybe someone else can confirm that by opening a test account - I hope it's not just me getting targeted). That ticked me off but the email I received made me boil.

I have sent them an email asking which site of mine they are using the exit pop-ups on. I also expressed my displeasure as you imagine. I love the stats I get from Hitbox and don't mind the banner I need to place on my sites. However - the interstitial BS has crossed the line!

Grrrr! I hope they know what they are doing to themselves. I know I will have to yank them and find another tracker too. Jeeez, if there is gonna be a pop up bugging my visitors you can bet your booty its gonna be mine and not someone elses. Well of course except Gator, Morpheous and the other 200 that compete against me on MY SITE <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon12.gif>

OK - I cleared out my cookies and visited my latest mini-site I am working on - Perfuming.com and left the site and an Orbitz ad popped up!

We shouldn't be surprised though. I remember when statmarket.com was free, and one day...BOOM, they tell me to pay to see the stats I was providing to them through my websites.

Ahh, the good old days when the internet was free. It was only a matter of time really.

Here's a prediction for you. The second that Google beats Yahoo, they will institute a pay for inclusion just like Yahoo. It's inevitable, neh?

I also should point out that these exit ads also will cause you to not be able to promote sites on places like Google Adwords Select and various traffic brokers that reject websites with pop-ups of any kind.

As far as Google having a pay for inclusion in their directory like Yahoo, I hope that their Adwords Select provides more than enough revenue to put charging for the directory on the back burner. However I read some comments from someone at Google stating that DMOZ links may not have as much impact on future Google search results so maybe changes in the Google Directory (uses DMOZ) will occur.

Anyone tried fishhoo? http://www.fishhoo.com/stats-web/overview.htm
I've just tried them on a couple of pages and they do track individual pages and heaps of other stuff...really like them so far and you don't have that slow hitbox button!

Larry,

Thanks for the heads up on that one. Like so many others, I didn't get an email from them either. It's not enough that they are using all the surfing demographics from our site's and selling the info. Just went on my site and didn't get a pop-up, but I hadn't cleared my cookies. Oh well, guess I'll have to go ahead and change to something else. Been meaning to because their banners have been serving really crazy off and on. Add it to the To Do List.....

Update for Everyone -

I contacted Hitbox and here is their reply-

"This is a test that Marketing is currently doing in your category. You can change your category to "Other" in your Edit Account of your stats page and you will no longer see the pop-ups. The pop-ups are currently rotating for accounts that are in the Beauty/Fashion categories. You can see which of your accounts are registered to this in the Edit Account of your stats page."

I get the feeling that they will be going from category to category running these pop-ups. If you want to stay with Hitbox then I suggest changing your category to "Other" with all your sites as I will soon be doing (be sure to update your code on your sites). I will likely try out some other stat counters on future sites as well.

No, I'm staying with fishhoo and moving all sites over.
Stats are so comprehensive, easy to access. Also in the past I've been pulled up by merchants saying I was promoting gambling, I couldn't work it out for awhile as I don't but it turned out to be the hitbox button!

I read the fish stat agreement and it says you have to have their link on a prominent place on your web page.

Does that mean above the fold, are will they accept it along the bottom of the page?
