    Exclamation Help Needed!
    Hello People,

I recently had an affiliate who joined me, he asked me for links to all the countries we sell to, i gave him that and all of a sudden on the saturday a day or two after i provided the links I received 2,500 hits (in a single day) from him and not a single sale.

This resulted in a tremendous loss of statistics that i have been working on, everything's gone down except ofcourse the reversal rate. The stats have been going up again.

But my 7 day conversion ratio dropped to 0.10% due to this unsual phenomenon. I tried contacting the affiliate to find out whats going on, but i havent received any response from him as yet.

The thing is not all the hits were unique as the tracking system we use internally shows 2600 unique visitors. So its safe to assume that around 1000 or more of these affiliates hits were not unique by checking with previous saturday logs.

Has anybody experienced something like this as i have absolutely no clue as what happend on saturday?

    Peace n Love,
    Clyde

He may have been using one (or more) of those traffic exchange programs and possibly surfing in on proxies himself. (or running bots?)

Can't you do some kind of adjustment for fraudulent impressions? Sounds like that's exactly what they were.

S/he's typosquatting on paypal, so that's one clue.

Another place to check, if you get an affiliate app that seems a bit unusual, is Google Groups. Here's what you can find about patpal there: http://groups.google.com/groups?lnk=hpsg&q=patpal.com

I would have said the person was just suckered into buying some crummy "bulk traffic" package, or that a robot that SAS doesn't recognize crawled through their site (for instance, a link-checker), but Rhea's link suggests that the site in question isn't on the straight 'n narrow...

Thank you for your kind words, Clyde. I believe that good does come around, and every bit of help I can give a fellow affiliate manager will inevitably contribute to making our industry better, cleaner, more exciting and more fun...

    Thanks again,

    Geno

Another clue is that he may be screen scrapping or collecting information from your web site using custom crawlers. Which could explain the hits and zero conversion.

Definitely delete his account from your SAS, report this issue to SAS, we do not need crazy affiliates like this in the industry.

My guess would be a source of cheap traffic. Scraper bots rarely enter via an affiliate link. :-)

Just curious - why do you actually mind the non-converting traffic? You don't pay for it, it just confuses the statistics. Is this a problem in itself?

@ Lenz, 2,600 visits not only affects my stastics but the entire marketing teams stats based on the conversion ratio.

Imagine if you had 5 affiliates do the same thing at one time, not only would it affects the stats but it will also eat into the servers resources, making it slow for potential customers to place an order. Of course this is hypothetical but not impossible!

Tell me why would any one want useless traffic on their website?

@ Donuts hes in my pending list i just mailed brian n michael to find out if a situation like this can be avoided in the future.

Thank you all for your time!

Clyde, thanks for the answer, I did not realize the whole impact of the useless (non-converting) traffic.

I hope yopu get it sorted out Clyde, anyone who's email bounces looks like trouble to me. I wish I had given you 2,500 hits as I'm sure there would have been many sales in there.

and you would have made a lot of money as well.

anyway michael did respond to me yesterday and he said that the only way to prevent this from happening in the future is to screen your affiliate applications before approving them into your program.

So this can happend to any merchant on shareasale that has their auto approval on... if you have your auto approval off its just a pain in the a$$ so,.............
