At first I sort of sluffed off this guys site. Not copied, but as I think more on it, the thought of very similar name is annoying.
This is my site's name www.walleyewarrior.com
Is there any infringemaent on rights or name rights by something like this?

The site in question is www.walleyewarrior.20fr.com/
Please do not visit their site unless you want to go into pop up hell. www.20fr.com provides free sites with the fr.com extention
Thoughts or suggestions anyone?
Thanks
WW

walleye - he is free to choose any name he wants doesn't he ?

Well it doesnt look similar, so even it is..You can't sue him for it...
I haven't checked ur fishing section

So there might be similarities there
Your the best judge to see if its similar...
And if it is, then u could catch hold of him

But I believe it looks quite okay with what he has done on that site

Regards

walleye,

The only incidents I've heard of where you may have legal rights to a domain name is if it contains trademarked words. Like if you had www.cocacola.net, then the Coke folks could have rights that name if they contested it's use.

Hmm.. there are a few reference to the phrase "Walleye Warrior" out there that don't relate to your site.. how did you find it though?

I've had some problems with malicious site and domain stealing myself recently - but I guess I only have myself to blame for that

Sorry but I don't think there's infringement here. It looks like this person is using "walleyewarrior" as a username - not as a domain name. Wildcards enable a url to be written http://username.domain.com instead of using http://domain.com/username/ They are sometimes referred to as "subdomains" or "vanity domains", but they are not Fully Qualified Domain Names in their own right; just somebody's user directory that has been aliased.

For example, I've been using the name "eaglefire" since 1995. Lst time I checked, there was an http://eaglefire.com, an http://eaglefire.net, and an http://eaglefire.org - all are different entities (Fire Companies).

Yet I've used eaglefire as a username on several free hosts that support wildcards and have been long before the Fully-Qualified domains' websites. I've also got an eaglefire directory on several of my paid hosts that support wildcards, meaning I can write the url http://eaglefire.mydomain.com/

In any event, unless you own the trademark Walleye Warrior, you've got no legal claim against someone else using it. Otherwise, anyone with a .com domain name would be able to prevent someone else from owning .net, .org, etc. with the same domain name.

BTW - I tried that address and got a DNS error.

Tahnks for comments everyone. My thinking is only they are trying to feed off other's domain names to generate traffic for their pop ups from hell pages.
Pretty much figured nothing could be done, just had to ask it though.
Dynamoo, I was just doing search through google looking at what pages may or may not be listed still for the WW site when I found them.
