    SAS problems
"They have much too often DNS problems."

Agreed. I wish they would upgrade the servers or the platform. Cold Fusion is not the best.

Usually the site is down 1-2 minutes max. This one seems to be more problematic (down at least 10 minutes now).

There have been issues with Verio lately, not just SAS servers. There are a lot of power outages on the east coast due to wet snow accumulating on trees that haven't dropped their leaves yet, causing huge numbers of trees coming down and taking power lines with them.

I will also admit that these short but frequent SaS outages are becoming a concern -- the persistence of these intermittent DNS problems suggests something more than a storm. I notice the problem more on weekends than weekdays, but I'm not sure that reflects accurately the pattern of outages.

Whenever I get an error at SaS, I quickly check my connection (I switched back to cable modem after perstistent problems with AT&T DSL), and I'm always able to access other web sites.

Is there a DNS attack, or is this truly just a technical problem?

mark, not to argue a valid point, it concerns me as well, but when someone reports SAS is down, I can go to several other Verio sites and they are all usually down. They are not on the same host as SAS, but the common denominator is Verio. In one of the threads was a Verio rep, I may go try and find him.

In the meantime I visited an awesome datacenter this week that I will shoot over as a recommendation if SAS is willing to look at a new co-lo facility.

Loxly, I certainl agree -- if the problem is their colo or broadband provider, then of course the solution is to move.

Back in 1998, I made the mistake of placing my first colocated server at Above.Net, not realizing that my install was happening on the day after their successful IPO. So many of the suddenly-millionaire employees quit that the company wasn't able to provide decent service, and I experienced many outages, eventually discovering that my "dedicated ethernet segment" was actually shared with a group of "zombie" computers that were saturating all available bandwidth launching denial-of-service attacks.

After several months of totally unacceptable service, I moved my equipment to another company, which provided great service for about a year -- until they were acquired by another company. Increasing outages let me to visit, and the temperature in "my" server room was over 80 degrees at the floor (where temperature sensors were located) and much higher at the top of the rack where my server was installed. They had rerouted ducts so that the server rooms for "more important" customers would stay cooler.

If the problem is with the colo facility or the bandwidth provider, move quickly.

Facts again. SAS is NEVER down and tracking is NEVER affected.

    (sounds familiar huh?)
