    ABW Master Race?
I thought this article was amazing...and of course I wonder...which class will ABW users fall into?

Humanity may split into two sub-species in 100,000 years' time as predicted by HG Wells, an expert has said.

Evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics expects a genetic upper class and a dim-witted underclass to emerge.

The human race would peak in the year 3000, he said - before a decline due to dependence on technology.

People would become choosier about their sexual partners, causing humanity to divide into sub-species, he added.

The descendants of the genetic upper class would be tall, slim, healthy, attractive, intelligent, and creative and a far cry from the "underclass" humans who would have evolved into dim-witted, ugly, squat goblin-like creatures.

You forgot the "Doesn't apply to Billy Kay" disclaimer

I think we're already prejudic by species

Not even touching the race or religion thing...

If there's one table and you and Burt Reynolds show up at a restaurant. Who gets the table?

In a country where it's against the law for an outsider to adopt, Madonna gets a baby.

Even a bad guy, like the congressman who was doing nasties to the young pages...

if there's a long line of "normal people" waiting to get into Pure (a hip nightclub at Caesars palace) and he shows up. Will he have to get on the back of the line? Or will they open the velvet rope and escort him into the VIP area next to Paris Hilton?

    I think we're already there.

"The human race would peak in the year 3000"

It'll probably be wiped out by then.

My wife tells me that I am already in that "genetic upper class" and if I wish to stay there then I had better be very damn choosy about a sex partner.

I think the de-evolution is well under way. Have you watched MTV lately? The only difference is that most of the morons are pretty good-looking.

I don't think we make it that far either.

Anybody here familiar with the movie/book "the Time Machine" (HG Wells)?

That quote sounds just like the plot of the movie. Except the attractive people were the 'dim-witted' ones.

...makes sense, the beautiful people don't have to live by their wits, so they eventually become 'dim'. LOL

I think the physical characteristics listed here are entirely backwards when it comes to their association with intelligence/lack of it!

I haven't read "The Time Machine" but if it says the nice-looking ones end up as the morons, I know I agree on that point. "Brainy" types already aren't known for being beautiful, on the whole. And, they don't often mate with dimwits, for various reasons.

It therefore stands to reason, IMO, that the speciation will put the brains on the not-beautiful side of the equation. We smart people will have nice-looking servants, though!

People would become less able to care for others, or perform in teams.
Yeah, because there's no need for a "team" when one head's worth of neurons can come up with, and implement, a plan! What the article's writer is failing to take into account is that things like "teamwork" will no longer be necessary in such cases, and therefore it won't be a loss if that mental "patch" goes away.

Things that actually need a team now (even when done by smart people) probably won't need one at all in another 1000 years.

On the other hand, dunderheads who already can't do anything on their own are likely to form even bigger, more brainless, herds. Eventually they may just mill around in giant megaherds like these wildebeests, grunting in each others' general direction, with no clue at all!

I thought all of it was just weird and backwards myself...

No offense to most of my jock friends in college, but the big, brawny football players were not exactly the Bill Gateses of the world.

And I truly don't know a lot of 6'2" models that could grasp calculus either.

So this article definitely befuddles me...who knows though!

Gotta give this guy credit...he is getting a lot of publicity right now

In The Time Machine (which is a really great book - both movies tended to stink), the leisure class 700,000 years in the future becomes beautiful but dumb, while the working class remains smart but but becomes ugly underground creatures. These future workers still take care of the leisure class, but more the way we take care of cattle and even uses the leisure class as food.

If I remember Brave New World correctly, and again the book is far better than the movie, people are born out of test tubes and genetically engineered to belong to one of several "classes". There is still just one human race, but very physically distinct groups. The main character in the book is considered an oddity because he was born naturally and has family relationships. With all the research going into genetics these days, we already seem to be heading toward the Brave New World scenario.

We've already pretty much broken from the standard evolutionary path. Survival of the fittest doesn't really apply to humans anymore. We protect the weak and even help them reproduce. And no, I am not suggesting we should not protect those born with genetic defects.

In addition, if we ever colonize the Moon, Mars, or even planets around other stars, then I bet we will see the human race start splitting into different species. The limited interaction between planets would tend to lead to distinct gene pools and the differences in gravity, atmospheres, radiation, etc. would certainly tend to generate differences between planetary groups no matter how much they are controlled for.
