Adding parameters to link without effecting SE ranking! Help! :)
We want to be able to track how many people click on any link on the page, and sometimes on the same page there are 5/6 urls which go to the same place, so we would usually put a parameter on the end of each of them to make sure that they are classfied as different links.

The search engines penalize this because of duplicate content, how do we stop the search engine indexing the links with parameters on them?

I'm not an SEO master, but I'd say changing those links would be a problem.

Why don't you send each link to a different (identical) page and track them using normal analytics?

Try using rel="nofollow" in the links you don't want followed.

    Such as: >a href="http://wxyz.com/xxxxxxx/llllll/12343" rel="nofollow"<Buy this product>/a<

< & > reversed intentionally just to illustrate this example.

Google recognizes this and other engines are beginning to follow suit.

The search do not penalize duplicate content!!!!!! They just ignore the extra content, if it is duplicate.

I use clicktracks which is a web tracking software that enable me to navigate through my site and see which links are being used on my site.

This is NOT true, we had a big SE fallout because of doing that.

If that was true all the news organization that publish duplicate news articles would be penalized

We are in the process of working with an SEO consultant on optimizing the Ameritrust site, and from what we have been advised, and from what we can tell from researching G guidelines and data, duplicate content does indeed have a negative effect.

I would appreciate very much hearing from others on this thread who may be bonefide SEO specialists, not guessers or woofers. This SEO thing is very interesting, and pertinent - factual knowledge shared by any who are knowledgable on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
