How do I remove nonstandard characters?
Is there a good program to remove all the nonprintable/nonstandard characters from a feed? Excel doesn't seem to do the job completely with the TRIM and CLEAN functions. Preferably a free program.

For the last few weeks I have been mulling over how to do this:

"Import Product Data from an XML source file."

as listed on the page you referenced.

I need to take a look at that - hopefully it works remotely.

I cant remember which ones they are off hand but you can normalise the data using cpan modules for perl, we use a number of them to correct the data.

Dont expect anything 100% perfect as a lot of character standardisation is dependant on other factors like encoding of the file and the actual characters within it (charset).

That will point you in the right direction at least.
