Question Missing Education - Help Needed
Dear affiliates, affiliate managers, and everyone else related to the industry,

I am thinking of running two polls at ABW: (i) where AM's will be asked to answer honestly (no names will be publically displayed) what education they wish they had, and (ii) same for affiliates. It could be anything! Psychology, programming, marketing... wherever they feel the gaps and wish they had a bit more training in the subject?

But before I start these polls, could you please help me with poll options? Based on your daily affiliate marketing experience and what you see others are obviously lacking, please post one area for the affiliate managers, and one for affiliates...

I will start (setting out the format) in the following post.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Geno

Most important to me personally, that it was most important to learn by doing rather than sit in a classroom learning about ... doing.

Lastly, I would like a course on how to format a post ... nothings working

    AMs -

Sales / Customer Service training. Read books like "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "Raving Fans" (I swear both were written just for AM's )

Leadership - Surround yourself with great people and lead them. I think too many Affiliate Programs are understaffed, making my first suggestion a moot point.

Oh I've got a list of "courses" that could be poll options for AMs.

Psychology! Especially as it pertains to people who aren't common herd, but aren't nuts either!
    Marketing
    Customer Service
    Fraud Prevention
    Motivating Others
Branding: The difference between protecting a brand and smothering it
Common Sense & Logic (all levels of coursework plus an internship)
Business 101: A sale is a sale as long as it sticks
Datafeed Production: How to make a proper datafeed
Avoiding Obvious Traps: Why NOT to give Froogle the same d*mned feed you give your affiliates (should be covered in Common Sense & Logic, but...)

Motivating Yourself: How to stop posting on here for a couple of hours and put the latest site up before the sales season for THAT starts...

I suppose Leader's right. Just because affiliates have a similar goal: Revenue, doesn't mean it's a Common goal. Ie: It's their OWN money.

While some team dynamics are still applicable, overall, it's a faulty comparison.

Of what Pops listed, I wish I had MBA education, as well as advanced marketing. Looking into taking some graduate courses here, but there's just no time.

I think he means teams of affiliate managers (an affiliate department). I know I need training in that. I suck working with others, but will have 2 employees in less than a month. Luckily one of them is my best friend from back home, so he "gets" me

No one mentioned language/literature for AMs (I know it's a long shot, but still...). Are all affiliates happy about the way the newsletters they get, and the promos they read are worded?

Geno: Having a grasp of the language of your target audience is key in any role, including AM.

So yes, AM's should be capable of writing interesting promotional material. And so should everyone else

No, I'm typically not happy with the way AMs communicate. They keep trying to sell me! I just want the facts laid out simply and in some kind of orderly fashion. Anything more than a couple of sentences should be presented in bulleted points. If it takes more than a paragraph to explain then there's either something wrong with the program or there's something wrong with the communication style. KISS, you know?

We all have way more work than we have time to do it in so AMs...GET TO THE POINT!!!

Great book! Was required to read this when first joining this company. Written a long time ago but everything still pertains to today's society. Still pick it up and re-read it periodically. Good read. Reccommend to all.

You must work for a great company if they do!

It is kind of funny to read the language they used back in the day, but it definitely still applies today.
