Use raw option AND get character conversion?

I have a dilema... I want to use the "raw" option AND have non-ASCI characters get converted. According to WebMerge Help, that doesn't look possible.
I use the raw option because I include HTML links for specific words within a field (I don't want the whole URL linked). However, when I use the raw option, non-ASCI characters are not converted as described in WebMerge Help. The result is getting nice links, but getting odd characters instead of em dashes, accents, curly quotes and such.
Is there a way to accomplish what I need: specify links within a field AND have non-ASCI characters converted, as they are when the raw option is not used?
Thanks in advance.

Right now WebMerge works as you surmised, either converting an entire field or not, as you specify with the "raw" option.
I'm open to suggestions on how we might make that more selective. How should one specify which parts of field content should be converted and which ones should be left as-is?Richard Gaskin
