My daughter wants to buy a prepaid calling card to visit with a friend in Tokyo.
She has been searching the web looking for the best rates on prepaid international calling cards.
Direct dial is $1.78 per minute but some of these cards she found are as low as $0.01 per minute. Are they scams?
What should I be looking for? and/or looking OUT for?
Can you suggest a reputable vendor or some other way to talk to Tokyo? Any advice will be appreciated

Having owned a Telco I can voice in on this one ...
#1 the $0.01 per minute cards are usually scams ... they have high per call set up charges and are usually muxed (multiplexed) to death (echoing).
#2 go to your local magazine / newspaper or convenience store and ask them which is the oldest card they have. then see if you can recharge the card automatically (phone or via web).
#3 Believe it or not ... I'll recommend IDT's card (see http://www.abestweb.com/idt.htm ) go to http://global-call.net I use them and they are reliable, don't know their rates to Japan but you will not have any problems, nor get screwed.

Actually I found a direct dial option to Tokyo for 6.9 cents a minute (interstate 4.3 cents a minute with online billing), a monthly billed calling card at 11.5 cents to Tokyo (no monthly fee/surcharges), a dial-around service to Tokyo at 11.5 cents (no connection/service fee), a prepaid card at 11.5 cents (no surcharge/monthly fees) among many other cheap options.
Hmmm... - I don't think Haiko will let me post my MLM ..... urrrr... ummm.... I mean my 6-tier affiliate program link here (unless I hide it in my signature line).

Issues picking a prepaid calling card?
The lower the cost per min the more chances its a catch in somewhat hidden extra fee's. We built our service around set prices and a RateWatcher technology.
Good luck calling the world!

Been away, now I'm back. Not as much, but I'm back & starting from scratch. Where I was, was fantastic. Where I am now, less so. Things have changed, become harder. So have I. Game ON!!!
