    Merchant Window Pop-Up upon click or vice versa??
    Hi guys/gals!

    Quick question for merchants and affiliates (OPM's input are good also).
    Was creating some creatives, etc.

    As an (merchant/aff/OPM), would you prefer to have the merchant's website open (pop-up) in a new window or to browse through from your website and Why?
    Ideally, the conversion matters to the aff and also merchant.

    So in coding terms:
    Browse through to merchant website from affiliate website
    <a href="http://www.fairfieldgetaway.com">

    Merchant website would pop-up upon click
    <a target="_blank" href="http://www.fairfieldgetaway.com">

    I am leaning towards the pop-up as the affiliate still retains the visitor but just want to get your input before putting a lot of my time into something.

    Thanks

    I usually leave this choice to the affiliate. Personally, I like a new window, but there are some out there who don't appreciate it I'm sure.

    Pop-up is the wrong word, new window is correct. The term "pop-up" usually means an unrequested ad, which ain't the case. I do both new window and same window on a case-by-case basis - I try to imagine what would best serve the customer. For example, if I do a comparison on my site and in the middle of it, I offer links to information, I open a new window - I assume they're still comparing and I want to stay on my site. In any case, I'd say there's no right answer here that fits all cases, test both if in doubt.

    Conversion wise, people have posted seeing no difference.

    What do you think of #9?

    Personally since conversion is the same, #9 in the link above, and there have been past reports of pop up blockers/or other things blocking new windows (it's rare, old threads about it at ABW) I don't open up links in new windows.

    I actually prefer new windows in a lot of situations (I even go so far as to open a new tab or window on purpose), but I can see how users may get annoyed...

    My experience with a free community site is similar to Donuts. If in the context of the link they could be reasonably expecting to carry on reading after opening the 'resource' you have linked to then make it a new window. If they're at the bottom or simply clicking a more obvious ad then I make it same window and I have ab tested and found the latter to work better.

    I, like most of you, am a power surfer. I am tech and internet savvy. Once they leave your site and are on the landing page you want them on, they may almost be in a situation of no return. Sounds unethical but I'm not talking about disabling the back button, I'm talking about surfers who don't know where it is!

    Also as far as that, if you have your links set to open in a new window and the person at your site doesn't usually like them, there's not much they can do since it is setup that way. And if you have it setup the regular way and they actually like new windows, in this instance they have a choice to open the link up in a new window themselves (if they know about the right click Open Link In A New Window link)

    I was looking for some stats on what people like and came upon this, which basically says what I just posted :

    Thanks guys for the input. It looks like most people prefer having a continuous flow as opposed to a new window.
