    Smile What is your title?
Hello fellow affiliates, what do you say you do or are when people ask you what type of business you are in? How do you describe your business to others outside the industry especially to people who don't know anything about affiliate marketing?

Some titles I have seen are "affiliate marketer", "advertising publisher", "online marketer" etc etc...

I just say I'm an affiliate marketer. And most don't have a clue what that means Then I say I have a shopping website that saves people money and they should go to it. Found a thread from a few years ago:

I usually just say I run a website. Then if they understand that much I might go on to tell them what type of site.

I tell people I am a magician. I pound on a keyboard and push a mouse around, then checks "magically" arrive in the mail every month.

More seriously, I tell people I run and Internet company. That usually takes care of most questions.

You may address me as , "She Who Must Be Obeyed."

On my tax returns however I use "webmaster." I think it's the least confusing of the alternatives.

I used to say "I run websites" but then this question would sometimes come up:

"...how do you make money doing that?"

and I would say "Affiliate marketing"

    which led to either:

    a. confusion

    or

    b. questions like "Will you show me exactly what you do so I can copy you?"

Now I just say I am a freelance advertiser.

I usually keep it short, ie: we do advertising on the internet. That way I don't get into a four hour explanation of the different internet businesses we own or manage. I'm past the age when I needed to make my position sound important - so advertising does the trick.

When I was just on the affiliate side, I would refer to myself as a Traffic Broker.

    I tell them in steps:

    1. Do you use Google?
    2. You know the little ads down the right of the page?
    3. I write some of those....
    4. ...and I get a commission if my ads result in sales

Typically I see them thinking "but how can writing a 9 word ad be difficult", followed by "but he's making a living from it", then finally "I guess I'll never understand".

If you own only one website then website/online shop owner sounds fine but it gets tricky if you own more than one site which i think is the case with most of us...

I say Internet Consultant. Which we all know is completely meaningless. That usually gets plenty of follow questions that turn into leads...

    Online Marketing Rep.

I tell them that I help online merchants increase product sales and attract new customers, which is exactly what a marketing rep does when she makes sales calls.

I don't use webmaster, because sometimes that impliies website management as the primary goal, at least as I understand the term.

My title ??? ... cat food provider

Most of my friends know I have shops at cafepress and they assume that that is all that I do ... I have tried to explain but kept getting blank looks and then questions about how my t-shirts are doing ... sigh ... well me and the cats know otherwise
