This is my post #3,000 and as the time approached I wanted to celebrate something.
I was hoping that #3,000 would coincide with Thanksgiving so that I could make a lofty speech
I have something early to celebrate
I set up the DSL today and I didn't need a technician to set it up for me.
I'll admit that it took me a while but I am quite pleased with the results.
Anyone who is curious, this is the plan I ordered:
EarthLink DSL (Available)
* Downstream speed of up to 6.0 Mbps
I have to go somewhere right now so I won't be around to read any kudos or barbs [as the case may be ]
I just viewed a complete music video that I was not able to see before on dial-up This is great

Congratulations, especially on doing the install yourself!
I've got a 2nd computer set up in the next room right now, too far to connect to the network so I ran a 25 ft cord and connected using the dial-up (still available when having DSL). It was AGONY - took 45 minutes to download AOL IM instead of a minute or so, I thought it would never end. And it isn't a slow connection, either.
You will love it more and more as time goes on, and the bonus is that now you still get to use your same email and webspace.

You'll wonder how you lived without it. If you're a smoker, you get no more cig breaks between pages.

Now that you've reached the 3k postmark on less than 300 days on ABW, and now that you know how much faster you can work on your web sites after going the DSL way, you should be able to finally start to get your hands on WebMerge, PHP and MySQL, now!
Let's see if you can play with any datafeed before your 4k post.
When I got my DSL last year about this time, I decided to experiment with PHP and MySQL for the first time. It only took me a couple of months to figure out how it works, and by now, well, you can guess the rest.
How about working with WebMerge and big datafeeds?
Well, while I was on dial-up I had to waste a few hours, just to upload any datafeed with more than 2k products, and after I tried those same datafeeds with DSL, it only takes minutes to upload.
But I think that you should be able to do it even faster, if you're using the downstream speed of up to 6.0 Mbps, you will leave me on the dust, because I am using the cheaper version of DSL for now.
Btw, now that you can handle bigger files faster than before, don't forget that unless you have a big Hard Drive, you can easily run out of space if you start to download too many music videos, movies, etc, etc.

I'd like to thank everyone who posted to this thread
Yes, it's better than dial-up and I'm amazed that I was able to hook up the wires with my computer and the DSL box
No, I was never a smoker. I made a promise to someone I love when I was 13 never to smoke and I honored the promise to this day -- but I drink a lot of club soda.
Special thanks to the nice post by Mr. Sal encouraging me to take things to the next higher intellectual level with PHP and MySQL -- now I have incentive to do so (the advice would be applicable to others who have yet to learn as well).
Thanks again everyone

Congrats, Rhia! DSL is heaven when I just try to remember those times when there has been nothing but dial-up.
