I think it lacks the PR.
Did not hear about it at all.

When apple launched the new Ipod (funky colors), I saw ads online and people were buzzing about it.

It should do just OK but if they put as much effort into it as the xbox 360, then it would have rocked.

Yeah, haven't seen much promotion for it, yet. Heard about it a couple of months ago and today I think they'll start the push. They have some concerts around the country, I see it on the msn home page ( of course ) http://www.msn.com/ there's a cnet video review of it , Starting to see it in many forums, younger crowd type forums.

Just tried an MSN Search on MP3 player:

    http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q...ayer&FORM=MSNH

    On the very top:

Most Popular products for MP3 players

If you click that link, take a wild guess which comes up first - Zune is coming up for me.

So they'll put that machine in motion. It should start getting a lot of reviews and if they're good, might take off. We'll see how things go, see what kind of buzz it gets.

Disclaimer: I'm a huge apple fan, but I do not own an iPod.

That said, I don't think the Zune has differentiated itself enough. As far as I can tell, the only real difference between a Zune and an iPod is that it has the wireless feature. And from what I've ready, it is sort of half-assed too. I mean, if you've got wi-fi in a handheld device, and you want to do social stuff with it, why is the only thing microsoft came up with sending DRM protected tunes to each other?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/13/te...html?th&emc=th

I mean, think about it. All I can do is send a song (or picture or playlist) that will play for 3 days or 3 plays and then delete itself (for music anyway). And you actively have to send other Zune's music. If I really wanted to do the social thing, I'd let people broadcast a stream or a downloadable list that they would like to share with the world. No need to send people things (that's too active), instead, people looking for good music can find it without having to get "sent" a song. While your at it, why not broadcast some details about yourself (favorite music, band, movie etc...) and alert users when there is a match in the area. I know cell phones in Japan already do this!

Plus, I think there are a lot of other reasons the Zune won't make it. Apparently, the DRM scheme is crazy, the Zune won't work with microsoft's last DRM scheme (playsforsure) and the music store that works with zune is not as easy or full featured as iTunes, plus it has less songs. And the pricing seems to be crazy...

    http://www.applematters.com/index.ph...ricing-scheme/

In any business, the best ideas are the ones that fundamentally change the playing field. In other words, you don't take on the iPod, you create a new marketplace that makes the iPod entirely obsolete. And microsoft just didn't do it.

Apple said they were not afraid of the zune

Here are a list of other companies that were not afraid of Microsoft products

Netscape said they were not afraid of IE

IBM said they were not afraid of Exchange

WorldPerfect said they weren't afraid of Word

Novell said they were not afraid of Windows NT

I think the Zune will be bigger than many expect. People are tired of iPods people like to be different.

Absolutely. I can see a lot of people buying it for that very reason, and after that it could do as well as the ipod.

It's clear they've thought about it quite a bit - a bigger screen, FM tuner and wireless music are nice new features. The wise thing to do now would be to integrate it into Windows Live and take over the world...

Hubby already has a Nano and I don't feel the need to be attached to music 24/7, so we won't be buying a Zune.

Weird name. Is it "zoom" and "tune" morphed together?

Anyway, I was browsing the Hammacher-Schlemmer catalog to get Nano accessory ideas for hubby's holiday present and wondered what those of you with a clue about these things think of the Nano car transmitter. http://www.hammacher.com/publish/73524.asp

What's the hot Nano accessory this year? (Not the Bose, puleeze, too pricey.)

Edited to add: This is the other thing I thought was cool, iPod Digital Drumsticks. Hubby is a frustrated drummer. Might keep him from beating up on our furniture. Not sure if this works with the Nano though. Anyone played with it? http://www.hammacher.com/publish/73225.asp

zune has no chance of beating ipod. it might be somewhat successful but it'll be like other auction sites. some do ok, but they're nothing compared to ebay.

Other auction sites usually haven't had past success in other areas and billions in the bank, no shortage of money to advertise, a search engine etc. So they can push it if they want. Will have to wait to the reviews start coming in. If they're mostly good, they can push.

    You never know:

"We will take it even further or connecting the Zune to the Windows PC or Xbox," he said during the company's annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday. "There is a lot more coming there."
