I have some sites sharing an IP and some sites with a dedicated IP. So far all seem to be treated equally by the search engines.
It seems to be content and layout that counts.
As far as cross linking, use common sense. Don't load up the links. Look at each site as if someone else owned it and ask yourself if you would allow a link.You must climb this mountain. There is no elevator. ---- Don't stick your finger in the liquid nitrogen.

Interesting. I always thought I was being penalized for having all my sites on the same server. Good to know that's not true.
What do you mean by "layout?" That part confused me. I understood the rest.

You are totally correct Witzer. No penalty for shared IP's according to Matt Cutts:
