Anyone recommend a good book on web page design? Nearly all of my sites all have a similar look and feel and while they are beginning to rank well and sell with good CR I am struggling with the design element. I want something that looks more professional without losing the simplicity that I currently have. In short I need new ideas.

Any recommendations for a 101 in web page design?

You should start with Krug's 'Don't make me think'. It's design/usability, etc... all wrapped up into one well read, well thought out package.

Frankly, it's the best book related to usability/design that exists. I honestly believe you will never earn your potential unless you read this book and follow his methods, and I've built over 200 websites in my time.

You can but it off of my page if you're feeling generous.

Web Design is a Nutshell by Jennifer Niederst and anything by Jakob Nielson(usability expert) Read Nielsons book Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity- In the book he visits a lot of sites, a lot of major ones and tells you where they screwed up
also look at Vincent Flanders http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com

Hmm. OK, a different question. Is there any site offering free HTML templates? I don't necessarily want to copy web templates exactly but I would like to explore some of them in my editor to get more comfortable with designing professional looking pages.

perfectg, I want to second the "Don't Make Me Think" book as my top choice. I've read the others mentioned in this thread and they are GOOD books, but Krug's, IMO, is the best place to start.

Krug is REALLY easy to read and comprehend. Then, if you want to move to something much more... clinical... get's Jakob's book. He's guru-esque for many people (I'm one of them), but his book can be tough sledding for anyone who doesn't have a background in usability.
