Hello,

What do all y'all think about a merchant belonging to more than one affiliate program? Is this good, bad, indifferent?

We currently use CJ but I'm interested in also using Performics because of the major partners they have. Any issue here?

Thanks for your feedback, it will help me as we build this company.

    -John

There are tracking issues for merchants with two or more programs.

For example, I got a reversal once that gave the reason "duplicate order" -- since I had no other similar sales for that merchant, I questioned them on the reasoning. Turned out that they had a tracking problem between their Performics account and their CJ account. The shopper had gone through my CJ link to the merchant's site and through someone else's Performics' link to the merchant site -- both clicks within the same cookie period.

When the they bought, both affiliates got credited for the sale. Then my sale got reversed.

So when I see merchants with two programs, I get nervous. It's one small incident, but it's a merchant I don't promote very much... if one of my big money merchants had duplicate programs, I would be wary.

    Cedric,

hey, that's an excellent observation...hmmm. That does make things a bit thorny.

Personally, I would go about the merchant side of the equation by setting up my own inhouse affiliate program, then use the affiliate networks simply as feeders into the program. That would give you a better control over defining the business rules of your system. If you have a good internal system, then you can solve problems such as two types of cookies competing for a sale.

I setup merchant ecommerce sites who have tried to track sales on more than one network. Parsing the referral information is beyond most shopping cart programs and most just record NO SALES to any referrer and the merchant get's off without paying anyone any commission. Dell loves this feature amongst other diversion tactics. If Performics requires you disable the CJ codes to test purchase their services sales tracking ...then don't use them or your cheating both networks affiliates. The only shopping cart I've uncovered that tracks up to 4 networks is Americart right in the merchant setup program.

All the networks refused for 1 year to respond to these challenges by me ..so it must be true!!

That's all good info. We're using Red Hat Interchange, and they tell us it's not a problem, but I think testing is the only answer. I would sooner not do a second program than mess up a good thing.

    Thanks!

It would be great to have multiple options to choose from but like you said if it is going to mess up the tracking then it's not worth it in my book.

Which "major partners" might these be?

I've switched back and forth with the same merchant from sveral different company's. I've yet to see a problem. If I find tracking to be off at one place I try the links from the other company's. I would love to see the same merchant at several places. It keeps the company's in check somewhat knowing that I can move from one place to another without hesitation. Which BTW I do quite a bit.

    I say go for it!

I really like how easy albeit time consuming it is to add product links at Performics. There you can add any product link that is on the merchant's site. This is much more difficult to do at CJ. So I think trying different options is great
