Scarry if iWon and AOL go to the parasite "darkside". We all know iWon is a e-mail spam farm and their premium plug-in is psyware and a Trogan horse Adwarez virus that takes over the browser to feed their own affiliate Ads. Now google provides listings for the some of the top SE sites so their reach is extended beyond their own traffic.

The actual search volume would be a better indicator to rank search engines. I remember reading an article on search volumes a few months ago where google ranked 2nd next to MSN

The Nielsen/Ratings seems to be traffic ratings of Portals + Pure search engines, two of which aren't really the same category, I think. Also, Google search has now probably the highest volume if we include the new search distribution partners like AOL, Earthlink, Netscape, Iwon etc... Anybody with a refeence to that?

I was about to say the same thing as BluesX. It's a bit odd that they would mix portals and search engines in their stats. The way I read that is not in terms of searches but in terms of general popularity - ie customer "stickiness". Remember, Google isn't a portal, it's just a plain-brown-wrapper search engine. Portals provide a good deal more in the way of content/services than search.

According to Wordtracker Google receives approximately 44% of search traffic. What also has to be factored in is that both Yahoo and AOL search is powered by Google. AFAIK Yahoo is still at the top although I don't know the stats (I don't bother targetting Yahoo yet).

On a similar note, here is an FYI on Google Demographics - I had mentioned this before but just found it:

    Google Demographics

    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>
    Demographics
    Male (52%), female (48%)
High education (61% have at least a BA/BS)
High income (average income is $75,000)
Online experience of 3+ years (79%)
    Online everday (55%)
Online shopping in the last 6 months (91.9%)
Online purchase in the last 6 months (78.3%)
