    Question Why border=0
    Anyone know the reason why just about every affiliate network seem to always leave out the apostrophes from the border tag on images. I always add it and don't understand why they always do this?

    The border doesn't require the quotation marks. It works with or without them so there's no need to add the extra characters. I still have trouble remembering that I don't have to put them in.

    What do you mean, they leave the quotation marks off the alt tag or they leave the alt tag off altogether?

    I hate it when they leave the alt tag off.

    Ask them. I can't think of a good reason to exclude it.

    Putting the alt tag in for us requires adding the element of description or copywriting to the task. I much prefer to write my own copy - unique content and all.....

    When the alt tag is there, it is often just an inventory tag like "468X60 BOGO". Then I have to remove that and write my own. Leaving it out of the link provided means efficiency on both sides - theirs and mine.

    Yes I know what you mean by the alt tags some merchant use, especially the ones used on Linkshare.

    But what the networks should do is include a blank alt tag like alt="" as that then validates the html and it means we can easily add our own alt tag or just leave it and it doesn't matter then as the tag is then validated. I also nearly always add my own alt tag but if I don't get time etc then it's good to know that there is at least a blank one to validate the page.

    Yes Rhea, I will l have to email sas about this when I get time, have been meaning to for a long time.

    Back to the original question for a sec...

    Re: Validation. At one time I was taught (long time ago so not sure if it's still the case) that any tag attribute displaying letters requires quotes, like alt="alt text"; and any attribute using numbers doesn't need quotes, like border=0. Just thought I would mention..

    I think you're right Gary, at least for HTML attributes. Watch out for the others (PHP, CSS, java, etc...)

    As for alt tags, try and make mind descriptive in LinkShare, but I'm sure most don't. I'd recommend changing them. Make them unique, plus its another SEO opportunity, so get a few keywords in there.

    The quotes are only needed if the text contains spaces, because otherwise the html parsing engine can't determine where the end of the attribute really is. It doesn't matter if the text is alpha or numeric... just whether there are spaces.

    All of these are acceptable:

    align=left
    border=0
    alt=OrderNow
    alt="Order Now" (single quotes are also fine)
    title=SorrySeaHawks
    width=100% (yep, without quotes is fine, even with the percent sign)
    href=mailto:roger@dodger.com?subject=Order_Now (look Ma, no spaces)
    href="mailto:roger@dodger.com?subject=Order Now" (notice the space)

    These are NOT acceptable - they'll all fail on the space:

    alt=Order Now
    title=Sorry Sea Hawks
    href=mailto:roger@dodger.com?subject=Order Now

    Hope that helps.
