    Affiliate Marketing and MLM
There is a thin line between MLM and Affiliate Marketing (we are even aware that in some instances they are now symbiotic), is there a need to identify a new category for these overlapping instances?

I think most people in affiliate marketing know the differences. We don't have any mlm stuff here, most of what I've seen of mlm is garbage.

There is no overlap, and definitely not a thin line. If you think there is you need to do more research into the definition of each of them...

One difference is that people who are affiliate marketers know the differences. People in mlm do not.

In my opinion, no symbiosis exists.

IMO MLM isn't about marketing at all, it only uses marketing to promote its garbage.
    It should really be MLG.

AM is marketing & selling to real customers.
MLM is selling to other MLMers.

    No, not symbiotic at all.

AM is marketing & selling to real customers.
MLM is selling to other MLMers.
Think that is the correct answer!

If you're so confused that you think you can sell us on a "thin line" between MLM and AM you are in the wrong place.

The only thing that might resemble MLM in affiliate marketing is a two-tier affiliate programs where an affiliate can sign up other affiliates under them and earn commissions from their efforts.

Your comparing apples and carburetors not apples and oranges when you say AM is like MLM.

Shoot, the only real thing remotely similar is the letter "M"!

Hmm, just a couple obvious points:

MLM = 1) usually trying to recruit other people to join the program to recruit yet more people.
    2) Usually have to BUY something or give some money into the program to join. Usually that money goes up the line to your recruiter, and then their recruiter, etc. Just a nice face on essentially ponzi schemes.

Affililate marketing = 1) Usually trying to find customers to purchase an actual product or service. Therefore a direct partnership between the affiliate and the merchant
    2) Rarely must purchase the product or give some money to the merchant in order to join the program

I don't really see how you could make the conclusion that they are related, or symbiotic?
