My website URL is on someone's forum profile (not ABW)
I was checking my site in Google and noticed lots of new external links. They are from another forum (not ABW) -- the member listed my website url in their profile as their website.

I don't know what to do. Should I contact the forum administrator?

    Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

I had the same thing happen once. It was a kid's forum so I didn't bother pursuing it but if the forum you're referring to is a professional forum I would definitely contact the forum owner.

No matter where it is, contact the admin and kindly ask him/her to edit it out and ask them to send a ban warning to the member.

Are they claiming your site as their own (around the forum)?

If not ask if they'll swap my link in place of it, I'll take free links to my site.

I'd see what the admin does first. Then if further action is needed, contact the offender directly. If it's your domain, you have all the marbles in your bag.

The admin has not responded yet. I don't see how I can contact the person that posted it in their profile. There is no e-mail address and the information that they entered in their profile is a bunch of nonsense just to fill in the required info fields.

Just received a response..."okay I'll tell him to remove it but it will help your Google ranking if you leave it"

Not only demand to get it removed, but out the forum. It sounds like they don't care about shady practices and should not be trusted for industry advice.

In most circumstances I'd be ecstatic to get free links. But in this case, I don't think it passes the smell test. I sure hope this works out for you without a lot of complications.

The admin just e-mailed me again and said that he will deactivate the members account if they do not respond to his request to remove it.

Now I'm nervous...I hope the member isn't a wacko and does something else.

Could it just be someone with a similarly named site who has typed it wrong?

The forum admin edited the member's profile and deleted it. I also checked the profile and it was deleted.

    URL listed without authority
There are many reasons for somebody posting your URL without your approval. But, the important thing you can do is verify for what reasons are this being accomplished. So an investigation is in order. But the meantime, I dont think it would harm if you let this publicity go on for a while.

    Unwanted Publicity is still publicity.

Agreed with loxly. In most cases, free links are great. And if someone liked your site enough to link to it in their sig, then you've got a great product there...

But claiming your site as their own. No thanks.
