I have seen a domain name that I want and is not being used.

What is the best place to use to catch this name when it comes free?

Any other options or advice would also be great.

Back in the Spring I found a name I wanted. I wanted it reeeeeally bad, so I subscribed to both SnapNames and Expirefish to watch and pounce on it the minute it became available. Snapnames got it for me (and Cedric is jealous!). Another service is NameWinner, which I tried once but with no success. The bright side of NameWinner is that you don't have to pay unless they actually secure the name for you.

I've acquired quite a few names through SnapNames (here's an affiliate link or a non-affiliate one). It's pricy at $69 a go, but you can pick up a site with good PR and inbound links without the effort of having to do it yourself. Snapbacks last for a year and if you fail to get the name you can re-use the credit for another one.

It's only failed for me once and that was for a premium name which was acquired by someone else (irritatingly) a new service called Dropcatcher- in fact, when the name was acquired Dropcatcher wasn't even a publically available service.

I tried to use Expirefish but frankly it was extremely difficult to find out how to use the thing, and I never bothered (this is after they fleeced me for a registration fee). I'd avoid Expirefish to be honest.

dynamoo.com - geeky stuff for umm geeks.
