Data Processing Error - I owe CJ Money
I just received an email from CJ stating that they discovered a data processing error related to my Sept and Oct transactions. I was paid for some invalid transactions during this time. They will be deducting .06 cents from my January commissions.

Yep!! 6 cents!! Anyone else get a similar email?

Maybe there are some 2006 audits going on and that's why the intermittant problems with logging in have been occurring.. and links not working...

    Probably not, but maybe....

I got this message too, but they didn't deduct 6 cents, they deducted almost $400. I've asked them for a list of the "invalid" transactions. Not that I don't trust CJ, but I DON'T TRUST CJ!

Only $35.11 here, but I think I'll be doing the same thing as Todd.

Wow. Looks like they'll have to send out corrected 1099's to everyone.

Demand that they send you a new 1099 reflecting the $0.06 difference.

Technically since they are deducting it in 2007 it will have to reflect on the 1099's that you get in 2008.

HG, being technical, you are right, but what the hay!! Go ahead and ask them to reissue the 1099 with the corrected amount anyway.....

I got the email, too. Is it showing as a positive or negative number for you? In the email I got, it says $-[dollars].[cents].

I've asked for clarification on which transactions/merchants, too.

From a PR point of view, I can't see any real benefit to charging back six cents, but I could see a PR benefit from crediting six cents if it was underpaid to affiliates.

When I saw the initial post, my immediate thought was "eBay" because that's the only merchant that ever generated such small transaction amounts for me, and they also had many adjustments and reversals. But I suppose there may be many other merchants who also generate small transactions like that, or where there may have been some kind of computation error on larger transactions.

I did not get any email about any adjustment (nor did I find anything in my CJ mail, which I logged in to check).

    Negative number, mine was $-399.15.

Have to agree that doing a six cent chargeback is pretty ridiculous. ($400 I can understand, if it's valid) Considering all of the commissions that were lost because of the Google Checkout fiasco, you'd think they would write off such a small amount in the interests of building a better relationship with their affiliates. Then again as I've already pointed out, CJ really isn't interested in any of that crap anymore. They just want to raise their EPCs by encouraging their merchants to partner with the super parasite crowd and dump everyone else.

    Same Deal..
Mine is for $-121.03... wtf CJ?!?

No details either it just states the following:

"We have recently discovered a data processing error related to your September and October transactions. As a result, you were paid for non-valid transactions during this time totaling $-121.03. This represents an overpayment and as such, a debit will be applied for this amount against your January payment."

I can translate those emails for you.

"We at CJ are about to sell the company. In order to do so, we are going to trim a few points off of every affiliate and make sure our books look better than they actually are for our prospective buyers. We figured it would be easy for us to trim a small percentage from every affiliate, which adds up to big bucks if you consider how many affiliates we have.

We asked merchants to cut non-performing affiliates so we can look like we have more performers than we actually have. This will appear to make our overhead costs look better for our buyers.

We decided this was the easiest course of action because the affiliates can do nothing about it. We didn't want to upset our merchants who pay us money. We didn't consider that the money they pay us comes from the affiliate sales. We don't care. We are CJ."

Locking goes to a whole new level
Just got this email (2/09/07) from CJ yesterday which takes theft to a WHOLE new level and this affiliate (since '99) contemplating why working part time at McDonald's beats doing business with CJ:

    -----
We have recently discovered a data processing error related to your September and October transactions. As a result, you were paid for non-valid transactions during this time totaling $895.48. This represents an overpayment and as such, a debit will be applied for this amount against your January payment.

We very much value our business relationship with you, and apologize for this inconvenience. The issue has since been rectified and we sincerely hope to continue the strong partnership that we have created.

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions.

    Kind regards,

    LR, CJ Account Representative

Has anyone else received such an email?

Or....does anyone have any ideas on how a 4 month old "data processing error" can be fought (without hiring a lawyer that would cost more than the close to $900?"

LOVE the idea about getting a revised 1099!!

I also asked for a complete listing of transactions & merchants but I'm not holding my breath.

Based on what everyone has said, the small amount taken from me, I concur that it has got to be some sort of eBay problem.

But, what was the problem? There cookies weren't overwriting affiliate cookies again?

It could not have been eBay since I never did that much with them.

I didn't receive one but I just can't help but chime in here. It is just unbelievable to me that these emails give absolutely no details as to what the source of these chargebacks are.

What kind of clowns are running this company? They just seem to cause one debacle after another.

If this isn't rectified quickly and satisfactorily, I'll wait to see the California Attorney General's office get involved.

As said earlier, this will not impact your 2006 Form 1099.

Well, just another data point - 99% of my affiliate revenue comes from Ebay and I did NOT receive the email people are referring to above.

I too find it inexcusable that no concrete/detailed information is provided by CJ. It's tantamount to saying "We're taking some of your money just because we damned well feel like it."

OK, now considering this is CJ, and also considering some of our old conversations about them, who was supposed to get this money?

So when they say "tracking is not affected", what are we talking about? It looks like they might not be accurately tracking the commissions due. hmmm. What's a network for? Processing the transactions correctly? Evidently not.

With the amount of potential $ involved there might be class action firm that would take it for a % of the final settlement (if there is one).

Class action specialists usually get the main money, however.

[just a note: actual threats of litigation are a no-no here]
