    Just been dugg...website down!!
It's a busy morning! My political website just got hit with a front page digg article, so it is crawling. Note for all the web property owners out there, be ready for that traffic when it comes!

Is it the "What America can buy with $145 billion..." article? If so, it appears the host has completely shut the site down.

Ha, nope. The link is http://www.digg.com/politics/New_Bil...rfing_Activity

But I just upgraded my hosting plan, so hopefully it'll come back within 24 hours. You can get through...its just really slow.

I clicked the link you just posted and it takes me to an error page, did Digg remove the article because your site is down?

hmm..its not down, ABW is screwing up the link somehow...

Here is is...add www. and copy and paste:

    digg.com/politics/New_Bill_Requires_ISPs_to_Monitor_All_email_Traffic_and_Surfing_Activity

    Edit:

ABW is adding a space after the i in Traffic and before the c. Take out that space for a link..

    Haiko, what's going on here?

    Double edit:

I can't figure this thing out. We're on page 2 of digg right now (http://www.digg.com/news/page2)

The title is "New Bill Requires ISPs to Monitor All email Traffic and Surfing Activity", about halfway down the page.

Even worse (better!) is being mentioned on a major TV program. You get a huge immediate spike.

I can't imagine what a Superbowl Ad would do. Imagine a million or more people trying to access a site at one time.

At least with something like Digg, it's a little more spread out.

I guess...this has been fairly dramatic. It got popular 3 hours ago and already the traffic is slowing down...

Don't bother upgrading. Digg users don't click, don't buy, etc. Being slashdotted is better, and some of the smaller aggregates are actually best for having people help you make money. My theory is, digg users just go down the front page of digg clicking on every link to "help" the digg effect, without ever actually reading the page. They do this so they can feel part of something special.

That said, digg did help get warner brothers to break their relationship with zango, so it has its place.

Well, I'm not really selling anything, so I'm not too worried about that. This site is so new I don't even have Google ads on it!

However, the slashdot request is in the works, so hopefully that will come through later today.

I design all of my sites to "degrade gracefully" under high volume. At typical traffic levels (and probably up to 5 times typical levels) everything functions normally. As the server load average increases, various components of the site are disabled:

    1) Scheduled Background Processes
    2) Banner Ads
    3) Search
    4) Graphics (sometimes dynamically changed from local hosting to external hosting)

When they get a huge spike, the users will basically just see a plain text page, but the server can handle probably 20 times my normal level of traffic (and 4 times as much as if all the features were enabled).

When the increased traffic can be anticipated, I've also set up extra servers using Round-Robin DNS so that the traffic gets divided between the servers.

That's the usual solution. How do you implement something like that?

The "degrading" that I do is very specialized and isn't easily implemented.

Round-Robin DNS is pretty easy. Just set your site up on multiple servers, then set up your DNS so that it lists multiple IP addresses for your server. When people go to your site, different people will get different IP addresses and the traffic is spread across your servers. There are other solutions that spread it more evenly based on actual loads (and removes servers that have problems), but the simple Round-Robin DNS solution works fine.

I can't get the URL to work, even removing the space, but did find it on page 2. Unfortunately the article seems to be a 404 at the final destination. Probably why you're slipping in popularity.

I'll try the article again later. It sounds interesting.

If you want to give me some tips I'd love to hear it! This is the kind of thing I'd really like to implement.

I can't get the URL to work, even removing the space, but did find it on page 2.
I just checked the article again, and I get through, we're actually running faster now (as I upgraded the hosting plan). Odd that you got a 404...

I can get to your site, and the article page is a 404, but the rest of the site seems to work.

Your site header and right side come up, but it displays a 404 message in the article body.

I don't get that though, I get the article. I wonder why. A screenshot is attached for proof! Ha!

It's because you (and/or your ISP) have a cached copy of the page and the rest of us, and the rest of the world, doesn't...
