My question is this: We have a lot of banner ads. Should we just take them off and ask people to use text links only? Are there certain sites like forums and directories where banners work actually better than text links?

Gotcha, will work on some content links as well. Not sure what exactly my options are in SAS. I know within CJ you can have individual ads for as much merchandise as you want.

Not sure if you have products links, there are lots of people that use those and also for the Page Maker tool they have.

Do you have any on CJ as well? If so, which one do you prefer and why?

    Thanks.

9 out of 10 of our clients are at ShareASale (SaS), and we're working on bringing 4 more to SaS.

Mike, drop me a line at info (at) amnavigator . com. I have something to discuss with you.

Probably one of the biggest reasons affiliates like SAS is they're parasite free. Don't know if that's necessarily a big reason for merchants or not. I use the make a page and especially the product maker and love that feature.
Big thing SAS has goin for it......Carolyn Everybody here loves Carolyn.
Lots of things are really popular with SAS but I'm an affiliate so can't say anything for merchants.

I actually kinda have an idea who you are. I know about your directory.
oops saw where you're new to here, too so

Sent! You seem familiar btw. So do quite a few people here. I have been on quite a few forums, just not this one yet. (managing an affiliate program is new to me, I was always ¨on the other side¨ )

I've been in this business since 1997, and I am entirely comfortable saying that ShareASale is currently the best of the available "affiliate network" options, from both an affiliate perspective AND a merchant perspective.

I'm now working on a large personal project (in my "affiliate" role), and I am working ONLY with ShareASale merchants, plus a few merchants with "in-house" programs.

ShareASale isn't perfect, and there are some crappy merchants in their network -- but I think there are fewer problems (by far) than at Commission Junction or LinkShare.

Good to know, Mark. Thanks! A lot of people have advised me to switch to CJ, but I rather want to know better and new ways to use them before I do that. LS I have not heard anything good about in the past 2 or 3 years. They once were considered number 2 behind CJ, but those days are long gone.

I was considering CJ for one of my other companies -- is the $4,000 - $5,000 or so buy in really not worth it as a merchant?

Anyone want to expound on the benefits/disadvantages of CJ over ShareaSale?

I'd love an objective point of view.

    Thank you,

Afshin: I'd suggest that you try to identify 3 to 5 merchants at CJ who are "complementary" (not competitive) with the business you are considering using CJ for. Find the affiliate manager for each of those companies and make an effort to talk with them. Have a short list of specific questions to ask -- be concise.

When you are talking with these folks, try to determine whether you are talking to the "decision-maker" or the "actual worker" -- that is, you may find that the CEO or Director or Marketing who chose CJ is very proud of the decision (or defensive about it), but the affiliate manager thinks it was a terrible decision. Or you may find that the affiliate manager is quite happy, but the decision-maker is horrified at the high cost or low ROI.

I have a strong dislike for CJ, but I do understand why some folks consider using them.

Finally, when talking with ANY salesperson for ANY company (especially a service company), don't rely on oral assurances or comments -- if something matters, get it in writing in your contract.

    Thanks
That is good advice Mark, I appreciate it.

I noticed that a lot of people who are a part of shareasale seem to have hesitations about CJ. I know I don't like the high cost of joining as a merchant, but I have always been curious, since they seem to have such a large network.

I'm in a field where our items are $400 - $700 per order on average, so we need quality, targeted affiliates. We do sell our jewelry and are successful at what we do, but I find that we need quality traffic to make that happen, from for example, wedding sites. If we can find some medium to large wedding sites to join our affiliate program, it would be immensely successful, as 80% of our products are wedding rings.

    I appreciate the response.

Affiliates seem to be less and less impressed with CJ but Shareasale has always had their full backing. I do believe that CJ still has a bigger affiliate base, but if you work and promote your program properly, then that shouldn't be an issue.
