I was thinking of starting a dedicated travel site and wondering what success others have had (and what to steer away from). Just looking at the deleted domain names over the seven days I see there are several hundred that have expired which leads me to think that maybe everyone is trying to get into this (or travel sites are failing after 9/11).

It's a much harder market now than it was before- but still, some of our top checks last month were sent to affilaites who signed up post 9/11

Focus is changing- business travel is hard to sell, many sites used hotel names in their URLs- and lawyers have been contacting them by the dozen at least. That's definately reflected in the domain drops.

You will also notice many deleted domains that are obvious travel agent domains- Travel Agents flocked to the web as airlines cut comissions - some have done well, others have relied on Travel Agent programs that spit out cookie cutter pages and do not allow access to html or original content. These are seeing no return and lapsing as renewal time comes up.

The ones doing well are focussing on niche markets, family travel and intense search engine work wich has alwys been a big player.

Don't forget travel is open worldwide as well- and the travel market in Europe did not see the same effects after 9/11

Security, tips, photos, reviews - those are all aspects of content doing great for different affiliates right now.

    hotels- great market
Air- not worth the work to get it in most cases
vacation rentals- harder to sell, but high end
car rental- high cancellations, high volume
groups- depends on site, high ticket, low volume- people shop around a lot for groups- very labor intensive to get the big comission
European Rail -low volume, high comission
cruises- ok if you get credit for phone bookings

I can't speak to the other areas as I am not as experienced with them

    Jessica,

Thanks. With nearly 500 domains with the name travel being deleted every week, I should be able to come up with something that will work and already has some traffic.

    Really appreciate all your comments!
