Question When will the Internet Crash?
    Just pondered on this thought.

With so many spammers and hackers the Internet will eventualy crash, this will happen one day, just like in the 20's when the stock market crashed. What will happen then?

The internet is a massive system stretching worldwide, hackers everyday are manipulating the system, rather they create dos attacks or hacking into govt agenencies or even phishing scams. Its just a matter of time before someone crashes the entire Internet, causing billion of dollars in loss revenue.

What will we do then? Well this is what I think:

The internet will eventually be controlled by different nations, For example (USA sites) the US post office will control all email servers, and you will have to pay for every email sent. All hosting providers will be controlled by the govt and heavily taxed. Each user of the internet will have to buy there own IP address for access to Internet.(which would be just like Social security numbers) The govt will be able to track every thing you do online.

Is this a bad thing? I think not because there needs to be some kind of regulations for the Internet. Take ebay for an example, I would never buy anything from ebay because most crimminals are already trying to beat the system, and depending where they are from, the US can't do anything about it.

SO my question to you is....WHo is going to create the next generation Internet and what will it be like?

oh, a crash as in a financial crash? That's already happaned too. the dot com boom and bust a few years ago. Admittedly nothing as severe like the depression.

I don't envision that happening, but hey if it did, I have loads of years of experience with print advertising, so the gears would shift, the price would go up and life would go on. Of course, when Google becomes king of the world, and takes over the post office and U.N.......... Nah, not going there!

If the internet was a commodity, it would have crashed and burned a long time ago. I opine that the strength of the internet comes from its interconnected framework. I can't even begin to fathom how one would "crash" the internet. Disrupt service? Perhaps. Could people lose the trust they have grown to have? Sure. But crash it? I just don't see how that's possible. Where would you go to crash it? Seize control of the DNS servers? I'm sure they have backups and contingencies for that.

No, I'll just keep my head in the sand and assume that everything is OK.

I have a couple of 486 machines in the closet and the software to run a bulletin board. Can dust them off and hook up to the telephone. ........................Bingo.....Bulletin board is alive again...

This is kind of like the argument about whether the universe is expanding infinitely or whether it will ultimately collapse in on itself.

The internet is expanding infinitely. When it threatens to stop expanding infinitely we can worry about it collapsing or popping or crashing. As long as it continues to expand it will always be operational, at least in part. It's not like there is a single point in cyberspace that controls the entire internet.

    Or is there? <elg>

The nature of the internet is setup so that it cant really crash. If something goes out traffic redirects.

I kinda agree on the expanding/collapsing theory. I think of internet as one of the last big revolution of technology. The last decades has shown more evolution for our own comfort rather than serious evolution (like internet, space travel...). I feel that technology on a general prospect is kinda stopping to evolve and i keep wondering what's coming next...

In order for anything to crash, it must be overvalued (in economic terms) first.
