    Welcome to the Web2.0 Forum
Thanks to Trust's recommendation Web2.0 Forum and Haiko, we've got a brand new place to discuss web2.0 type platforms and how they can be applied to affiliate marketing.

SO, my hopes is that this becomes not only a place to brainstorm and theorize, but also a place to actually put things to task and test.

Looking forward to some great, and valuable, conversations!

    Sam

Behold the power of Twitter, Missy!

Not sure why you didn't get the message, Loxly... did you turn off SMS messages (which I highly recommend)? Sometimes I miss a few since I just have Twitter going to my GTalk client within GMail.

    Web 2.0 - Dead 2.0
I personally don't think is a good idea to talk about Web 2.0. What is web 2.0 anyway? The truth is that IT MEANS DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. There is no standard of WEB2Oness.

What really bothers me is however when sites get labeled web 2.0 either because they want to OR despite of themselves.

For example Brian says in general Web 2.0 sites are slow, so now since I use ruby, and widgets, and get labeled web 2.0 is there a good chance my site is slow? Will that be the perception?

Social sites are web 2.0 - so Is Abestweb web 2.0? Are all forums Web 2.0 now? and why do we care? My mother does not care about web 2.0 because she does not compare it to web 1.0 - she just pays attention to the functionality of the site...

I understand we have a need to call things by name, but aren't we just talking about emerging technologies...

I develop Web2.0 products and I am glad to to have a group of people to talk to about it.

I look forward to engaging in conversation about this exciting new realm of emerging technologies.

I do agree with the Pirate above in that we probably need a few defining categories to relate our posts to instead of just one big conversation regarding Web2.0.

    Peace

    David

Hey Loxly... I tried using Twitter through GTalk on my Blackberry as well, but it doesn't show either. I usually don't use the SMS feature, so what I do is use a neat service called Twapper which lets me follow my new messages within the Blackberry browser and then SMS to Twitter when I have something to say. Definitely saves on the SMS usage!

You could always just switch on the SMS function... but we all know what that leads to!

    Hi jollygoodpirate...

The truth is that IT MEANS DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
That's exactly why we started this forum.

Trust and I had been going back and forth about web2.0 and practical use of these emerging technologies and tools and ended up realizing that the best thing to do is start a discussion about these things and how to use them for everyone's benefit.

Couldn't agree with you more that web2.0 means different things to everyone. IMO, affiliate marketing means different things to different people as well. In fact, everything means different things to different people. That's not moral relativism, that's realizing that we're all individuals with unique experiences and viewpoints.

So, in order to learn more and not get stuck inside our own box of a head, let's hammer out our opinions, agreements and differences... and see how to keep affiliate marketing on the cutting edge of web development. Affiliate marketers have always been very good at that in the past, so let's not stop now!

That's how a few people found out about the forum, Carsten!

We'll get to a Twitter discussion later (I do love me some Twitter'n)... but let's keep this one about intro's and general issues.

Or... go ahead and start a Twitter thread if you feel brave enough!

You're quite right. The definition of "web 2.0" has been lost. It started out as "the web as a platform" where "web 2.0" sites were sites that distributed information via RSS. They might have also aggregated the information, but there was always AJAX.

I think "web 2.0" as a term is on it's way out. We've found more descriptive terms that mainstream media seem to like. These are all part of the "social" family: social media, social networking, social software and social shopping. Some people might consider many social sites "web 1.0" because they don't employ newer techniques like AJAX. But personally I believe in order to be "social" you need to provide a social network mechanism where users can be-friend each other like MySpace, LinkedIn or Friendster.

Sites like ABestWeb where the forum is the emphasis are social in a sense, but they don't fit into the modern definition of social media. A forum with a social network might be social but a forum without is still a forum.

So we're just starting to see the divisions of "web 2.0". Eventually the divisions will be more important than being 2.0.
