The "safest" states all seemed to have one thing in common: I'm not convinced I would want to live there. I can't even thing of a major sports team that resides in any of the top 10 states. Or am I wrong?

I myself am happy to see Virginia ranking #36 (or one of the safest)... NY isn't doing too bad. I would've never thought it would rank #31 (or one of the safer states). Would you?

Hey don't you have your own television stations in Utah! What are you doing watching ours

In my opinion, we're very safe. From the moment we leave our gated communities, we're being videotaped by someone. Even our stop lights have video cameras.

I picked my son up at another gated community yesterday, and the gate guards made me back up and stop, as the security camera didn't clearly capture my license plate number!

And because there are slot machines everywhere, there's security guards everwhere. They're in the gas stations, the grocery stores. Even bicycle guards patrolling the parking lots.

And these aren't the frail 95 year old security guards. They all look like former football players

Except for the occasional body dumped in the desert, I always feel safe

I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Utah. It has its perks (it's a pretty clean state and the people are friendly), but I grew up in a big city and don't enjoy the small town life of where I live (finishing my degree at BYU). I'd take Nevada TV any day...

The only thing I didn't like about Vegas was the strip. There were a few too many, uh, fliers, for my tastes. I don't do a lot of gambling (because I'm bad at it), but Vegas was pretty fun. I hear that life away from the strip is a blast as well.

But what's an occasional dumped body between friends?

I think they should only count states where people actually live.

My home state of CT ranked #40. WTG Nutmeggers!

    Anybody notice a pattern here?

    40 Connecticut
    47 New Hampshire
    48 Maine
    49 Vermont

Looks like New England is the safest region to live in the U.S. I always thought so anyway.

Geno, I read a study years ago that correlated violent crime with mental health statistics. The mental health statistics correlated strongly to the transience of populations by state. NY was one of the least transient states in the U.S. As I recall Florida, Texas, California and Arizona were in the top ten for most transient state populations and also had comparable figures for violent crime.

IOW, where populations are stable (people live in the same state in which they were born and raised), transience is low and therefore mental health is relatively high and violent crime is relatively low.

Love the new sig Billy. You will always be somebody to me.
And you better be darn glad that red firebird even bothers to pull up in your driveway.
You are lucky to have such good friends.

Hey, I did take the trans am out today. Beautiful sunny day and had to drive a mile to get my son at school since the other vehicle was gone for the day.
