    Private messages and newbies
I understand and agree that newbies shouldn't be allowed to initiate private messages. But every once in a while (say a new merchant), I do want to send a private message to a newbie and get a reply. I think that newbies should be allowed to reply to a private message initiated by a full member of ABW. Just not initiate a message without 50 posts.

First of all moo, we do not disclosure the number of posts - I think we've said that for like 3 years now . It's because of people posting a or the number that I upped it and really only allow it on a case by case basis now.

Secondly, the way it works if they were allowed to read and respond then they would also be allowed to initiate [spam] away as well, who benefits then?

Thirdly, merchants usually get the right when I change their usergroup to AMs but I held back because of the pissing fight the two of them got into.

OK, then lets look at it the other way. If I send a message to someone who can't read it or reply can you add a message saying that they can't receieve messages at this time so I know they r not ignoring me :-)

Why not just use the 'Send a message via email to [username]' function shown in the profile? Everyone can reply to an email.

    If they want to.

Not everyone has that option enabled, by choice. For example ojmoo doesn't, and you do.

    How about something even easier?

... If they don't have a sig they can't read PMs ... so, don't send one.

Hmm. I can read PMs...but haven't yet seen that I'm able to create a sig. Am I doing something wrong?

... 'it' being the threshold of the number of posts for PMs and sigs, you've passed the PM one but not other [sigs]. PM me for more information.
