I have a site hosted with Burlee. For weeks now, someone has been using my only email address for the site to send out viruses, spam, etc..

How do I know? I get close to 100 returned emails a day with "cannot send" or "detected a virus" so it returned to sender, etc...

Burlee is offering no help to me. I'm a bit clueless. Is it that the spammer is using the Burlee mail server to send from me, or are they just putting my email in the reply somehow through whatever deployment system they are using?

Any thoughts on how to stop this? I do not want to be labelled a spammer.

Thanks.

Not much you can do other than to try to track down the sender, then contact the ISP or the upstream provider.

Likely it's someone holding a grudge, since spammers usually wont fake other ppls email addresses (added: with one exception: you have gotten a spammer into trouble). From what you wrote it also seems the spam email contains a virus.

You can check out these resources on how to track down spammers:

http://chanabuse.ftn.org/resources/headers.html
http://www.stopspam.org/email/headers/headers.html
http://www.rahul.net/falk/mailtrack.html
http://spam.fynet.com/tools/mailblock.html
http://digital.net/~gandalf/spamfaq.htm

FYI, I don't know how many of these are still online. You should also try to get one of the original spam mails, not a bounced one.

added: Burlee should be able to tell you if someone has hacked your site (using your account). I cannot imagine they wont care to check their logs if you mention the "hacking" word.

Affiliatemakeover...Chances are this is NOT somebody using your e-mail, but somebody infected with a virus that had you in their address book. The virus will forge the 'From' header to show another address that was in the victims address book. These will bounce back to you and unfortunately there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. One thing to keep in mind if somebody sends you an e-mail saying you sent them an infected e-mail, be nice and explain what has happened...remember, you are getting bounces but some of those don't bounce. If for some reason you have an irate victim that contacts you, you can referr them to us and we'll explain how it all works (lord knows we've done it enough times in the past few months )

Hi,

Robots grab your email address from your website and them use it to send spam and viruses.
Below is a website that will tell you how stop robots from getting your email address. http://www.robelle.com/tips/email-cloak.html. Hope this helps.
Have a great day!

Thanks everyone. I finally got an answer from them, after 5 emails, over 2 weeks. They said the same things you did.

Sad that they took so long. I have no viruses, so it must be coming from someone else's box.

See if your hosting company will do thje same as mine. They had a big problem with spamers hacking into the email servers, so the email will only function if you download first then, and only then you can send email.

Most spammers will not go through the effort to download email to send our some spam.

Of course the screensaver is a virus. We are flooded with these things daily, usually coming from the same address...I also get a ton of bounces from where it was 'sent' from our addresses...We aren't infected and its difficult to tell who is.

Bigvaluezone, you are referring to authentication of the server...With authentication, it requires the POP to be activated first where a username and password are required to check the log-in info.
