    Just built my first dual-boot linux machine...
    Uses Ubuntu 7.04. It comes with a lightweight compiz window manager that gives you the wobbly jello windows and menus, but you have to check a couple of boxes.

    I feel the need to make it run the full Beryl manager, though that might be asking a bit much of this 5yo refurbished dell laptop.

    I have been using Ubuntu since it first was released and it continues to improve. Open Office, that was mentioned, is GREAT. If you haven't done so, go to Automatix and install. It gives you a wealth of multi-media packages, a really nice ftp program and several other features. I should mention that I have been using Linux exclusively for about 4 years and don't know how to go back to the other side,
