Google Checkout and Blue Nile - No Affiliate Credit if under $1000
I got an email Friday from Blue Nile and I just got a chance to read it. It was a Google Checkout promotion for $20 off a $35 order, but with a huge catch: "During this limited time due to the nature of this promotion, orders paid via Google Checkout at price points less than $1,000 will not be eligible for affiliate credit."

I just sent a reply letting them know that they've been dropped from Amazing-Bargains.com and I let a couple of my contacts at LinkShare know as well.

I'm fed up with clueless merchants.

That's nothing short of astonishing. Mostly because it makes no sense, unless of course the merchant/AM is delusional or very, very stupid. Care to speculate as to which it might be, Michael?

Although non-specific concepts of madness have been around for several thousand years, the psychiatrist and philosopher Karl Jaspers was the first to define the three main criteria for a belief to be considered delusional in his book General Psychopathology. These criteria are:

    * certainty (held with absolute conviction)
    * incorrigibility (not changeable by compelling counterargument or proof to the contrary)
    * impossibility or falsity of content (implausible, bizarre or patently untrue)

I vote for impossibility. Check me on this logic.

Clearly any argument that this is a worthwhile offer is impossible to support, therefore the author is incorrigible and it's a certainty the offer is crap.

These are not mutually exclusive. I was considering applying to their program, however I already deal with enough cleless merchants.

I pm'd this thread to Ranae and asked her to comment as to whether this is allowed by Linkshare.

Unintentionally excluding sales through any payment option is inexcusable. Intentionally doing so reprehensible.

I would venture a guess that more than 90% of Blue Nile's sales are under $1,000. While Google Checkout doesn't account for a lot of sales, even one is too many to be excluded from affiliate compensation.

LinkShare is supposed to be talking to the merchant. I don't think they knew about it, but most networks typically let the merchants do whatever they want. The response I got back from the merchant basically just says that they're not recommending that affiliates promote the offer, but are just letting them know.

    They've been removed from Amazing-Bargains.com.

Most networks do typically let merchants do whatever they want, but intentionally denying commission due to a particular payment option violates all good faith of a business partnership. Blue Nile is totally taking advantage of the Pay Per Sale nature of affiliate marketing. They can't pull these highjinks through any other form of online advertising.

There are two simple solutions here, either reinstate commissions on Google Checkout purchases or disable Google Checkout from visits coming through an affiliate link.

By the way, I can't help but wonder if Google itself is an accomplice to this by aiding Blue Nile in implementing the code.

To me, this once again calls into question affiliate tracking for any merchant using Google Checkout.

The networks need to modify their merchant agreement to specifically indicate that it is a violation of the agreement to deactivate affiliate credit as a result of selecting a particular payment option. What's next...merchants only paying commissions when the customer uses the merchant's in-house credit???

I make a point to avoid promoting G Checkout merchants (although a few slip through). Plenty of other fish in the sea, I don't need the added concerns....

Okay I know I should be stating my outrage but....

....they would do this before I am ready, we have a new Diamond Merchants in Launch (sas) and if Blue Nile could have waited one, maybe two, more week, then the timing would have been perfect

Michael, have you gotten a followup on this?

The ramifications of this will be significant if Linkshare doesn't put a stop to it. By allowing a merchant to cancel an affiliate commission due to a payment option, they are effectively telling all merchants that this behavior is acceptable. Then merchants will start doing it and not even tell affiliates.

Actually, I'm not really waiting for a response. I took action as soon as I read the newsletter. Whether I get a response or not, they're already removed from my site. They might be able to convince me to put them back, but somehow I doubt that they will (or that they care).

LinkShare ought to be concerned as this effects their revenue too.

According to the LS Deal Dispatcher, the Blue Nile offer will pay affiliates

1st time Google Checkout users can save $10 on a Blue Nile purchase. Google Checkout orders are valid for affiliate credit.
Maybe their listened or is this a completely different offer?

The last responses I received indicated that they wouldn't pay for Google Checkout orders under $1000. I'll check again.

In any case, I'm not working with Blue Nile again until they get a new AM or their current AM goes through one of Andy's seminars. To even think about implementing such an affiliate UNfriendly practice is enough to keep me away.
