Can anyone offer some advice here - I am thinking of purchasing a new domain and wish to check that it has not been previously owned and engaged in lots of 'spammy' activities.

I know the first place to check is archive.org - but no record there does not necessarily mean it is guaranteed clean - a webmaster can request that they are removed from their index - is there any other method of researching a domains history and unearthing possible google penalties etc

I have searched the net in vain!

    2 ways.

goto the search engine and just type it. both with and w/o the extension. If it's not listed, it's been banned probably due to SE spamming.

    next, goto http://relays.osirusoft.com/cgi-bin/rbcheck.cgi

enter the domain and it'll tell you if it's on any list.

BUT BEWARE: these lists and blockers are true Net Nazis. Don't type in the domain or ip of your mail, because they may automatically add it to a list of domain to "check" because someone "suspects" the domain might be spammy.

Also do a search on Google Groups to see if there are any reports in there, in one of the net.abuse newsgroups.

Hang on. That's not right at all. If a domain name is not listed in a search engine, all it means is that domain is not in that search engine. It doesn't mean anything more than that.

You can't presume that the domain has been banned or penalised. Indeed, the name may have never been purchased before or the previous owner's site was taken down and has fallen out of the search engines.

I should have been more clear.

If you search and it's there w/o the extension, but not with the extension, ie, domain has results domain.com does not, then that's a hint that it might have been banned. Of course if it's a common name, then this won't help much.

You can also look for a link check. If there are links to the domain, but the domain w/ the extension are not listed, it's a high likelyhood that its' been banned.

I agree, it's not 100% accurate, but it'll give some info.

Might want to also perform a link popularity search on the domain. Chances are any domain with a link popularity value greater than 10 has been developed some point in the past.

To do a quick check try Marketleap.com. To do a more extensive check of several hundred domains to check if they've been previously developed, you may want to try out our site.

    Enjoy!
