    Digg out of Control
    http://mashable.com/2007/05/01/digg-out-of-control/

Interesting what's happening right now with Digg. Anarchy has taken over and the site is in turmoil over an HD-DVD encryption code. All the top stories are revealing this code to get back at the MPAA and Digg is apparently helpless to moderate it.

I guess accountability just went out the window here. Not too difficult for Digg to find each account that posted the code. I just wonder how many new accounts are being created to add to this chaos. They'll probably throttle new registrations and ban all the accounts that contributed.

From snooping around on digg a bit, I found out this code was originally posted on a forum months back.

But it was the attempted skweltching (spell?) by digg and others that led to this meltdown. Not everybody 'gets it' and now everybody 'gets it'.
A lesson for others I guess.....

Would hate to be a mod there

Who thinks it will be handled by tomorrow night?

Ah, someone posted HD DVD is one of Diggs sponsors.

This was written about back in Nov 19, 2006, they kind of predicted the potential problems:

    Sux to be them!

To clarify, I'm yessing because I think Digg deserves that response in this instance, not because of a desire for chaos in general.

Banning accounts just for posting/commenting about a certain story...on a site that's supposedly there specifically to get people to submit stories and comment about them? No wonder the censorship exploded...

    "We'll be back shortly.

Digg will be down for a brief period, while we make some changes.
While not digging, the digg crew recommends:"

Edited out, we're all posting at the same time

Back online. I wonder if the irregular digging will continue though.

I have been watching this since the first story. What a ride! Digg usually brings other sites to their knees and for once the users brought Digg to it's knees. Amazing.

Nuts nuts nuts. I agree with Leader, things are nice and wild out there, which is good!

There has finally been an official message from digg: http://blog.digg.com/?p=74

Seems like the way they had to go in the first place. If you go to court and lose, then take down the links. At least you have someone else to blame.

this is getting more interesting as time goes by

CNN headline " Digg.com in 'hacking' copyright row"

I have a gut feeling that this one is going to end up in court. If I owned Digg I wouldn't have come out and said "oh well I guess we'll get sued". That was a public admission of guilt. I wouldn't have said anything and just let the stories fly.

Asking them to remove it backfired. All this did was fuel further publicity for something they never wanted published in the first place.

    I'm not so sure Mack...

Seeing as this code is now totally "out of the bottle" so to speak, what exactly is the point? Digg did try to stop the flood, but they failed. Really, holding digg responsible isn't going to do much for anyone. I think the HD-DVD people are probably trying to sit this one out and whether the storm.

when this ends up in court i'm sure digg has their butts covered by the terms of use, but will have to turn over ip addies and such so that the MPAA can go after them, which will then be put to the isp with the ip addie.

This will result in a few little fish being caught, sued and convicted. Others who were mere zombies (hack computer) will get a lesson in Internet security for allowing their ip to post such stuff, and the true hackers who decoded this will already be working on decoding blue ray from their untraceable proxy.

long story short the hackers win, lawyers get rich, idiots get nailed and the code is out.
